Tyres outside?

Featured Replies

I've had my steels sitting outside for 7 months now, exposed to the elements for the last 5. Does anyone know if tyres deteriorate if left outside without being used? I can see very small cracks in the tyres, but they're hairline like what you get on bycycle tyres.

Would rather not get 4 new tyres just before I sell the car.

Cheers. :)

Should be fine. Tyres left outside? Isnt you're car left outside too? :)

Eh??

have you been drinking?

Personally I take my tyres off every night and put them in the shed, wrapped up in an old quilt, and I leave a nightlight on in case they get scared,oh, and a picture of a wheel in case they get lonely...............

Strewth.....

:P :P

The wheels might detiorate a little bit if they're in contact with water and not being moved very much, but that would be marginal.

The tyres will be just fine. ;)

You lot . .

I have alloys on my car at the moment, I took the steels off when I bought the alloys but the tyres on the alloys are nearly shot and I don't want to get new ones if I'm selling my car in a few months time.

By the way, no I havn't been drinking. :P

Put the tyres that are on the steelies on the alloys that are on your car.

Simple really........

( not you btw that is simple, just the solution, but given the first question.......)

Only joking..:D

nooooooo mr grumpy. :D

Wheels on your car rarely get a chance to be in contact with water and remain in contact with that water for very long periods of time. Saying that. I had some steels kept outside for ages, and the wheels and tyres were fine. Generally metal doesn't take too kindly to be stored in damp places. Mr Rusty gets to work usually.

I'm confused by my own post:confused:

I think I'll stick to talking about things I know something about.......................

Night Night:rofl:

Mr Grumpy always goes to bed early.

When do we get a shot of Mrs Grumpy? :naughty:

So the tyres are OK then?

So the tyres are OK then?

All joking aside, yes mate, they should be,

but before you refit them, remove all spiders, check for splits, and dry out the insides properly:thumbup:

ok, thanks.

What if you can't do the splits?

tyres should be ok , they do deteriorate over time when left in the sun (U.V. light) but as we have only just got some proper good sun this year there shouldn't be a problem , now if they had been on a car that hadn't moved in a while they may have deformed due to the weight of the vehicle and lack of movement . Obviously check all the pressures before use

Put them on, they seem fine. :)

Noticeable lack of braking power now. The tyres don't bite anywhere near as hard as the old ones.

tyres do deterioate in the sun ...caravan owners have known about this for some time ....the answer is to stop the sun shining on them (cover them with a sheet or something) as they are off the car there is no problem, but if left on the car which stands in one place for a few months (just laid up ) then turn the wheels every few months so the tyres don't crack.
