Fabia underseat bass options...

Featured Replies

Yes I know, under the seats is never the best idea, but I cannot afford to lose any space in the boot.

What are the options, has anyone put any bass unit there and it's sounded ok? I am not after mega bass.

I will be using the symphony stereo in conjunction with whatever gets installed.

I once had a 150w kenwood amp and 8" boxed sub in a 106. That was almost overkill. So, I am looking for that kind of level of um 'bassiness' but with something that will fit under the front seats. I think blaupunkt and kenwood do a unit and yes I am just about to check their sites.

I dont want any of those bass shaker things by the way!

I dont have the CD Changer.

I would consider two small units, one per side, of 50-100watts.

Don't want to be drilling holes into the floorpan, however I have some workaround ideas (bonding/gluing to floorpan is ok).

I would consider doing the job myself but if anyone local is good with stereo installs I would provide a nice dinner and some beers after the job is done as a thankyou.

Edit: is this what I need to hookup the symphony to a bass unit? http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/preamp.asp

I'm in the same boat as you.. want some extra bass but can't lose boot space...

I quite like the look of one of these Kenwood units.. just not sure if it would fit. :)

cheers, that is exactly what I am looking for!

but...will it fit?

might nip out to the car with a tape measure in a bit...

Why not just upgrade the door speakers, and dynamat the door areas to get a much punchier sounds out of the standard doors.

How about one of these? It might just squeeze under

Now i've worked out hot big it is....

I'd be surprised if it will fit under the seat, but on the side of the boot might be another option...

ooppss.. double post... not trying to artificially increase my number of posts... honest! :)

I might make something up out of cardboard with the same dimensions as the kenwood and see if it'll fit...

I tried the under seat sub option in my old MkI octavia, to be brutally honest the sub was a bit wheezy and a decent set of door speakers will do the same job.

Incidentally, it was a Kenwood KSC-SW1 (150watts)

Even worse, the Kenwood didn't fit under my seat properly:doh: so it had to live in the rear passenger foot well for a while  . And yes, I am fully qualified to use a tape measure.

In the end I bit the bullet and stuck an Alpine SWD-2000 in the boot.

Well with something the size of the kenwood unit is never going to compare to a proper sub in a decent box.. it's all about compromise. And in mine and texasjohn's case a proper sub in a box in the boot just isn't an option.

As for the door speakers John is using the standard head unit I doubt very much you'll much of a difference, I on the other hand aren't and the better HU does squeeze that bit more out of the stock speakers and long term I will be replacing those as well. The only other option that comes to mind is a couple of 6x9's in a stealth shelf running off an amp.

in all honesty, you wont be happy with half a job.

Get some nice 6x9's and put them in a new shelf, complement this with new front door speakers and a new head and you have the basis of a much better system depending on what you chose. I have a sub, but is would think that with good 6x9's you would do well going for that Alpine mini sub thing (Not sure what model). It will pack the sound out some.

I have spent about

I meant chuck out the current door speakers and put some better ones in there, maybe infinity components or something, and replace the plastic spacer ring with an MDF one and drop some dynamat on the door skin behind it. You may also want to replace the speaker protector with one specific for sound quality.

Stealth shelfs are getting to be a bit of a sore point with insurance companies. I heard first hand of an incident where they insurance wouldn't pay out medical costs when a shelf (non standard) made out of wood, shot out of the car in an accident and hit the drivers head/neck. Didn't sounds pretty at all. If it had been a standard shelf they would have done, so if you do it make sure it's a bought one and you declare it.

Indeed. The reason I need boot space is for the dogs. Having said this to put the dog guard in the shelf (stock or stealth with 6x9s) will need to come out. So, a stealth shelf with quick release wires is in fact a good option for me...I have a jigsaw too, and MDF is cheap enough if I bugger up the first attempt!

Now to find some 6x9 speakers, 6x9 subs or even a couple of 'free air' type subs. Also an amp that will fit under the seats (a much easier task than finding decent sounding all-in-one underseat sub/amp).

With that in mind here are my two options:

1. With the right amp I could power some nice speakers up front with 2 channels and bridge channels 3 and 4 as a mono into whatever I fit to the shelf if I put a free-air sub on the shelf. ;)

Or...

2. 4 channel amp, channels 1 and 2 driving upgraded front speakers, then channels 3 and 4 driving two-way 6x9s in the shelf. ;)

Comments on those two ideas please?

I'd go for the first option - you could hide the amp under the seat and then have a removable shelf or box in the boot when you need the space.

In a small car like the Fabia a decent set of front components plus sub is perfect.

sounds like a plan then ;)

You mean a sub on the standard parcel shelf John?

  • Author

That or (more likely) a box in the boot with an 8" subwoofer and quick-release connectors on the speaker wires, maybe just banana plugs (like on posh hifi!).

Amp mounted under the seat can stay there with no impact to space in the boot, just run speaker cable from that to drive the woofer.

However, slight concern that an amp under the seat might get a bit hot though. Thoughts on that, anyone?

now where did that boy get that Furby, o6, hmm. looks good:thumbup:

Should be plenty of airflow under the seat - as long as there are no obstructions around it etc.

Do you have the box under the passenger seat?

Oh - be careful of the airbag wires under the seat!

What box? If you mean the smallish storage box with the lid just under the front lip of the passenger seat, then yes, I do!

Cheers for the tip on the airbag wires too (I don't have side airbags however, if that is what you meant?)

Sounds good, I wouldnt have the woofer in the parcel shelf- much better in a box. If you want any help wiring up etc ive done two Fabias successfully now ;)

I think the airbag wires are there to sense someone sat in the seats so they deploy in a crash.

Cheers for the offer Dave. Might take you up on that and provide some refreshments for your trouble!

I think I will do amp and front components first off (I can fit the speakers) and see how I like that, can run a speaker cable to the boot myself thereafter if I want to run a sub.

Cheers! Just ordered one!

Dont even think about 6x9's, they try to do everything great yet just give a lovely wet fart noise, they also ruin your soundstage, anyone who knows a thing about car audio know they are aload a crap to be honest.

Get your self a set of speakers in the front doors and amplify them, that way not taking up boot space, and if you do it just right, you will be amazed at the amount of bass they provide (i happily run without the subwoofer in my car alot of the time and the sound is still immense)
