hesitant and uneven start

Featured Replies

Hi guys, having an issue with my 2016 2.0tdi Superb Mk3 and after some advice. For a couple of months the car sometimes has had periodic trouble starting, takes a while to fire after cranking for what can be up to 5-6 seconds. Other times it starts up straight away, no issue at all. I stalled this morning and it would not start at all. Plugged in my jump pack and fired straight up, no problem. Drove home about 1/4 mile away and turned off ignition. I then tried to cycle the ignition four times and not a problem, started everytime. Does this point to a bad battery seeing as my jump pack starts it? or could it be something more sinister due to the fault occuring so random??

I do 60 mile journeys daily so the battery should be getting a decent charge. I have had it where the car has been sat overnight, starts fine, drive to work, sits for 12 hours, struggles to start. It's very uneven which is driving me potty lol

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated

First question that needs an answer is how old is the battery in the car?

If the battery is original replace, others have replaced on newer cars already, mines a 2016 and needs doing as it isn’t going to last in winter for sure

Hi, mine's still the original battery. We just replaced the wifes battery on her 1.6 golf which is 6 years older but has an identical one to mine. Her symptoms were consistent though so I was positive that it needed changing.

Just strange why it's fine one day, knackered the next. I've ordered a new battery to cover all bases, just wondered if anyone else had had similar issue and it turned out it was something else.

Thanks for the replies guys 👍

Have you got vcds etc? Need to change some things just in case you weren’t aware

Yeah, got vcds to let it know the new battery parameters

If you have stop/start feature and it no longer works, that is usually one of the first signs of a duff battery.

changed the battery and all is well so far 😊

I had similar intermittent problems starting on my Octavia TDI from 2014.

Sometimes lots of dead cranking other times, fired up first time.

After changing the battery everything has been fine for the last year.

I didn't program anything just changed like for like (AGM -> AGM).

You should have changed the ah at least as most aftermarket’s are 70ah compared to 68ah and the bem serial
