Check oil level!

Featured Replies

This message came up yesterday so I checked the oil and it was low.. I put in about 600ml of oil and the dipstick was showing on the higher side of it. Ever since it’s kept giving me this message upon start up (no dash light) just centre screen. It disappears after about 2 minutes of driving but I don’t want to see this every time I get in my car.. do I have to have it read and cleared or is this something I can do DIY?

Thanks

Jack

  • I just checked my manual and there is nothing about having to reset anything. Opening the bonnet for 30 seconds appears to appease it and if you don't add oil it comes back on after 100km.

  • When it is hot, switch the engine off then leave it for 3-5 minutes before you check it. Probably teaching granny to suck eggs but remove the dipstick, clean it, replace it, make sure it is fully home

Thank you for the quick reply! I have opened the bonnet and it’s still there but it does disappear after a couple minutes driving 😟 pesky car 😅

A couple of minutes is fine.

When was the oil last checked before the warning and at the right level checked at Normal Operating Temperature.

& where is it on the dip stick when checked cold?

*If you open the bonnet and had not put in oil it would still put the warning light / message out for 100 km / 62 miles.*

So what engine have you.  1.2 or 1.4 TSi?

600 ml might not be enough oil when checked at Normal Operating Temperature.

A 1.4 TSI Twincharger can be 1.3 litres low and the light / warning come on.

Dip it when stone cold, and again after the oil has got to 90*oC and you have parked for a few minutes.

It’s the 1.4 twin charge, I checked it both times and it was at the top.. could I of put too much in there or not enough? I’m going to take a steady 20minuet drive shortly so I will check when I get there then check when I get back to the car.. it does disappear after a few minuets but you probably know it’s irritating seeing it pop up 😅

Where was the oil when you stopped to put oil in?

It can be at the orange ball before a warning on some twinchargers.

I always run with 3.9 litres in from an oil and filter change.

That was cold dip oil at the top of the crosshatch and on the flat part, below the top orange bit.

As it is 1 - 1.3 litres low from 3.6 litres can sometimes have the Low Oil Pressure light (Red Can) on before the Low Oil Level (yellow Can).

What oil filter is fitted, a black one or a silver VW/Audi one?

I have a silver one on there, I bought the car a couple days ago, the guys grandad had passed away so he was selling his car.. has a service history and the filter looks brand new. I will give it a good service payday. I’m going to take it for a 20 minute drive or so shortly and check the oil when I arrive and then once I get back to the car. I know it’s got oil in there 100% but the car doesn’t think so 😅

When it is hot, switch the engine off then leave it for 3-5 minutes before you check it. Probably teaching granny to suck eggs but remove the dipstick, clean it, replace it, make sure it is fully home, then remove it and check it is up to the mark.

I doubt it is the Oil filter on too tight, or the old seal left on and a new one.

That is usually the Low oil Pressure warning you get.

So if when the engine and oil is hot and parked and flat and engine off a few minutes (4-5 mins)  the oil should be just above the cross hatch, or at the top of it.

*** One time i did an oil change and put in Mobile 1 5w 30 FS III, took it for a blast and oil light and message.

It was sh!te hooky oil that the guy had given me that he had got from it falling off the back of a lorry.  A punch in the face hurt. him.***

I’m happy for people to teach me how to suck eggs 😊, my mk6 fiesta at used to drink oil as much as what I’ve heard the tsi does.. but if I can avoid some bs with the brains of these cars then I’m happy as Larry

What is it, a 2010-12 CAVE, or 2012-2014 CTHE?

  • Author

How would I know? Sorry for the dumb question 😅

  • Author

Just seen some invoices in the car and it’s a CAVE395720

They stopped fitting the CAVE engines late summer 2012.

Then it is CTHE engines fitted.

When you do the next oil and filter change i would go with 5w 40 FS oil, That is not long life, so annual / 9,400 miles oil and filter changes. it is VW502 00 spec.

This was after a 20 minute drive, oil temp was 92 degrees. Left for 5 minutes. I am going to do an oil and filter change on payday so I know she’s fresh, I used 5w30LL from what was used in its last service so I didn’t cross contaminate the oil 😊

Too low.

Get it to the top of the cross hatch when topping up cold.

  • Author

Damn it 😂 I’ll do that when I get back to the car or when I’m home?going to be about half an hour-1 hour just now before I’m back to the car

Could this not now just be the bonnet lock micro switch sticking in the "bonnet closed" state - so until that is sorted you could put a lot more oil in and still have that warning showing.

  • Author

Would it show on the dash if the bonnet is open?it does with the boot and every other door

After the bonnet was opened the  the Warning should have gone out after a little with the engine started.

It must have been very low on oil if that was 600ml in and only that far up the dip stick.

?

Is the Check Oil light out yet or not, have you got enough oil in now?

  • Author

Check oil message still on there. I am waiting till it’s cold now before I check it again, literally the light came on and I had put oil in it after driving it 500 yards. I’ve opened the bonnet whilst the engine is running and whilst ignition is on.

The oil is probably just on the cusp and when the oil gets warm and expands, it is enough to put the Low Level light out after a couple of minutes. You should top the oil up when it is warm. If you top it up when it is cold it will be above the mark when hot. Unless, the instructions for your engine are different from mine.

The engine oil volume from 15*oC or so to 92*oC is very little changed.

As we know from previous tests with Twin Chargers and official Oil Tests and weighing and measuring in a container and heating.

The thing is the filter up top.

When the oil is all drained and in the sump cold it is a bit higher.

When up to temperature of around 90*oC and been in the Filter and around the engine it is not all back in the sump even when hot, and not quite as high.

The official quantity of 3.6 litres is not much which is why some use 3.9 or 4 litres.

Just be sure there is enough in when cold, and not too much, and compare the level when hot. (Not warm as the Owners manual said.) it is what the VW, SEAT & Audi manual said.

At Normal Operating Temperature.

The same thing has been discussed for years, same engines.

I’ve just been reading another thread for the exact same thing that you’ve been a part of. Could the cause of this not removing the oil light be a faulty sensor? Or do I keep topping up till it goes off completely.. I have an issue now where the dipstick says it has oil but the cars not having any of it 😂

  • Sponsor

Yes, could be level sensor fault.
