Check oil level!

Featured Replies

@Jackhodge998 Just do not put in too much oil, top of the crosshatch even when cold, if the light stays on then you know there is a fault.

But you must have been running with pretty low oil by that picture from the dipstick if that was after oil first top up.

The engine will have been pretty hot.  You dodged a builit.

Many never did when the Low Oil never came on.

Is there no Yellow Oil Can light as well as that message?  There should be.

  • I just checked my manual and there is nothing about having to reset anything. Opening the bonnet for 30 seconds appears to appease it and if you don't add oil it comes back on after 100km.

  • When it is hot, switch the engine off then leave it for 3-5 minutes before you check it. Probably teaching granny to suck eggs but remove the dipstick, clean it, replace it, make sure it is fully home

I checked for gunk in the cap but like an absolute weapon i didnt check the dip 🙄, the light never came on whilst the man was booting it and it drives good in every gear with a full service history.. past 2 years since his grandad owned the car he only did 8k miles with 2 services. i mean it could just be poor timing that i got the car and now the sensor is faulty. but who knows.. i got the car now so ill get it sorted :)

Would it show on the dash if the bonnet is open?it does with the boot and every other door

I'm reading/interpreting what you wrote as " on the dash each door and hatch opened show on up - but when the bonnet is opened it does not show up", if that is the case, then sort out the micro switch and/or lead before looking elsewhere would be my plan.

Edit:- in other words, the car's systems need to know that the bonnet has been opened before it will revisit and clear the low oil level warning, logically, if the bonnet has not been opened then the oil level can not have changed, if that makes sense.

Is the oil now right to the top of the hatching on the dipstick? If so I would suspect the sensor, but why it goes out after 2 minutes or so is anyone's guess.

yeah its at the top of the dipstick after the extra top up. I will do an oil and filter change along with the sensor. will wait till payday and just keep an eye on it daily till then so fingers crossed 😧

Checked the Haynes manual and the oil level/temp sensor doesn't look too difficult to replace when you have the sump drained, which you are talking of doing soon anyway.

For goodness sake, has the OP not said that the dash display does not register the bonnet being open, while it does so for all other doors and hatches, I'd be sorting that out before buying a new low level sensor, much cheaper.

I have a friend visiting for a week around about that time so we will get it sorted over an afternoon :)  i will come back to this post and let everyone know the outcome. its my own stupid fault for not checking the dipstick upon purchasing 😞

So why does it go out after 2 minutes?

According to my manual, a faulty sensor causes the yellow oil can to flash and displays "OIL SENSOR WORKSHOP!".

What about one that's partially blocked up with sludge?

pressure or level sensor bud? i did see that but i think that was for the pressure sensor? i could be wrong too

Mk2 Fabia vRS do not have 'Bonnet open' warnings on the dash.  So if there is nothing showing as Bonnet open that is why.

As to opening the bonnet.

Yes the car needs to know the bonnet is open, to reset the Low Oil warning.

Elephant in the room is, even when you do not touch the oil, not add any, the warning stays off for 100 km.

Not Simply Clever, actually bl00dy stupid.

that clears that up then :D

Yup, that would have been an easy fix, but you could always try unplugging the lead to the bonnet micro switch and stuff a paper clip across it, I'm guessing that if its open circuit that equates to "bonnet open" and if it is short circuit that equates to "bonnet closed" - but that is purely a guess as doing that would  make it fail safe for cars that show an open bonnet - like most/all later cars.

If that worked, then the "Low oil level"| light would get reset until you let it run low again.

My logic was, the previous owner kept an eye on the oil level as maybe he knew it "liked" a bit of oil added frequently, and so even if the bonnet micro switch was faulty, it would never have caused any issues, you then bought this car and basically didn't quite keep on top of checking the essential fluids and the "Low oil level" warning appeared - and if the bonnet switch was faulty that warning would never get cleared just by adding in oil.

Edit:- even leaving out stuffing a paper clip into the removed lead as I'd think that open circuit for a few minutes would be enough to reset the low oil level warning - if that bonnet switch was in deed faulty.

Tried finding the switch online but can only find a latch, I’ve had the car 3 days and it was my own fault for not checking the dipstick yes 😒🤦 not my proudest moment I must admit! Could have happened a few months down the line but hey. I’ll have another look online at if there’s a switch and go from there.. if that fails then I’ll just do the sensor along with an oil and filter change

The bonnet switch is to prevent tampering with the alarm, if you open it with the alarm set it should go off.

From page 31 of my manual.
The warning light  flashes yellow* (engine oil level sensor faulty)
A fault on the engine oil level sensor is indicated additionally by an audible signal
and the warning light coming on several times after the ignition has been switched
on.
In this case have the engine inspected without delay by a specialist garage.
The following text will be displayed in the information display*:
OIL SENSOR WORKSHOP!

One thing that I can't enlighten @Jackhodge998 on is, the exact location of the plug/socket for that bonnet switch, I never ever noticed it on my wife's previous 2002 Polo, but on her 2015 Polo, it sticks out like a sore thumb very high up just at the washer fluid tank, which seems a very obvious or important position for something that hopefully never needs anyone to gain access to, strange.

I checked my own car this morning and when I unlatched the bonnet, even with the ignition off, the bonnet open warning shows up (the bonnet turns white on the graphic).

I will hop in and check mine just now along with checking the oil, does the ignition have to be on or the car started as well? Thank you for checking 😊

Aye it’s not registering the bonnet being open. I’ll give it a spray with wd40 and see if it releases before I go buy another latch ☺️

Bridged the bonnet switch and it’s not registering the bonnet being open.. next step is fuses but I can’t find diddly on where that would be on a fabia.. there’s one for an Octavia but not a fabia 😟
