1.0 TSI cold start noise

Featured Replies

Hello, new member searching for some insight into a cold start noise affecting 1.0 TSI engines.

I actually have a VW up but have found another video of the same noise in a Fabia, hence my asking here.

Here's my video:

and here's the video from the chap with the Fabia:

I've spent quite some time trying to trace this and feel it's best-heard in the region of the crank pulley; I'm aware of a couple of threads on here about oil pump noises from the 1.4 TSI and wonder if this could be similar? Does anyone have any info about this noise?

Welcome.  Sorry no ideas.  What age and miles is your engine? Has it servicing / oil change and filter and is it running 0w 20 FS IV?    How long have you had the car?      PS. I am not aware of the oil pump issues with 1.4 TSI,s.  Which age of engine is that, and is it timing chain or can belt engines?     EDIT. PS.  I see your post in the MK3 Octavia section on the 1.4tsi.  Nothing to do with your 1.0 TSI as far as I think.

Some here can maybe point you in the direction of nuts loosening off when they should not.  1.0 TSI,s.

Hello Ootohere and thanks for the kind welcome. Thanks also for the bump to the other thread which I've noticed (it happens I'm already aware of the prob with the variator cap bolts - cheers though).

I've had the car from new, the noise started after approx 3 months, car has now done 23k and is 2.5y old, has been serviced as it should by VW - there is nothing suspicious in its history. I've a thread on the upowners club in which several others with up GTIs report having the same noise, but no diagnosis. The chap with the fabia in the video above has the clearest video I've found of this noise, it clearly affects more than one make/model.

Mine was looked at by my dealer multiple times last summer (it's taken me this long to recover!) - they replaced the OPF heat shield, the turbo actuator rod and checked the aforementioned camshaft variator bolts - none any use; now I'm basically searching for info to strengthen my case before I return to them.

I've spent a chunk of time trying to trace it myself and feel it's loudest in the area of the crank pulley - I've had the aux belt off to discount the a/c pump, alternator and tensioner, and have checked the variator bolts again, the cambelt and the position of its tensioner.

The 1.4 TSI oil pump noise is different but is in the same area as this one, so is what I'm thinking about at the moment. Or some other internal malady.

Hoping someone can shed some light!

Has anyone any ideas? Any techs on here?

Does anyone else have this noise in their 1.0 TSI?

It's normal, no problems.

There is a tpi about spraying the toothed belt with special lubricant

  • Author

This sounds like it, thanks so much for posting, 2 years I've been looking into this!

Might you be able to share the tpi number please? Even by PM would be great, very interested to take a look.

I did notice a small amount of dust and fibrous debris in the belt housing when i checked, not normal? It's a dayco belt.

You will usually get a very small amount of dust but shouldn't really be able to see any fibres. Have you removed the top cover and inspected the belt?

  • Author

Yeah, i removed the top cover to check all of the variator cap screws and position of the tensioner at tdc; there wasn't much dust/debris but i noted it, thinking it was probably normal, sounds as though it is. Yellow dust and small number of bigger albeit tiny fragments, belt looked ok to me.

Can you help further in trying to track down the tpi? I can pay for an hour on erwin but it's easily lost if you don't know where to look, i'm new to it and have noticed there are very few tpis against my car, i've had to search under other cars to find stuff about the variator screws for example.

Very grateful for your help

Yeah it's not easy to find the tpi and service notes tbh. I haven't got access to the data anymore I used to have. I'd suggest using a silicone spray with the top cover off.

There is an aerospace lubricant you can use, allegedly it makes your belts last forever. They use it on aeroplanes. Looks like a white liquid that conditions the rubber.

Just search TSI special lubricant, I'm sure it's just silicone based stuff.

It'll be a few days before i get a comfortable hour to search erwin, will come back, thanks again

I thought it sounded like induction noise

It's very hard to tell in the videos, cameras pick up different frequency from the ears.

It's an odd sound, like a metal vibration, I've wondered about lots of possibilities although feel we're in the right area at the bottom of the engine. It's less prominent when the weather's hot, so not a great time to be diagnosing, in the summer.

Blue8793841, have you first-hand experience of this noise or are you commenting from a more general experience? I think I'm going to pay for 24hrs of erwin so as I can have a really good look without having to worry about running out of time, probably tomorrow.

The only noises I've heard about are camshaft bolts loosening, evap hose and resonator, oil pump noises, injector noise, turbo wastegate/actuator noise. I have fitted the odd water pump too. Have you removed the auxiliary belt to rule out anything there?

IIRC when the German engineering failed on the VW Eos model roof there was an expensive VW labelled and numbered stuff (VW do luv to add their spec and part numbers to stuff, adds value (cost)) or the owners got some stuff called Gummi Pflege, which is just the German words for Rubber Care.

My personal choice to stop noises (and where you'd perhaps use the inferior WD-40 Multi-Use is GT85 (now made by the WD-40 Company but formerly a a British product).

Silicone roof or other rubber use products.-

My wife's 2015 1.2 TSi (4-pot) has always made various noises at various times from the engine bay mainly depending on what the computer programs want to do at any given time.  Personally I've always found the VW 4-pot engines to sound noisy, perhaps why the VWs had so much insulation, so I'd expect a VW engine with one less to sound even noisier, especially as VW aren't that used to lower cc engines and three pots turbos (and as I'm used to smaller Japanese 3-pot turbos) but even then I thought your engine sounded noisy but you have the bonnet open.  As a GTi, particularly if driven like a GTi, personally I'd be quite strict about changing the engine oil and filter properly and using a better quality engine oil, taking VWs servicing requirements of both as an absolute minimum but be changing properly sooner with better.  This would also apply if the car gets lots of short low revs, high gears journeys too, especially if also low annual mileage and none or very few proper blowout runs (more so for a GTi, unless it's just a badge like some AMGs.

Thanks to both of you. It sure is a noisy engine! I should admit that I'm not going to be spraying anything anywhere unless in complete confidence.

I've already had the aux belt off to discount the ancillaries. I've also kicked-off with erwin this afternoon and have spent a good while so far, nothing doing though. I've found mention of this special lubricant but only in relation to its use for the sunroof. Loads of interesting snippets about other things but no eureka moment with this noise sadly.

There is a noise at the start of the videos which I would say is the oil pump. Is that the noise you are referring to?

Quoted in case your question was missed by ham92.

I hear a, like, catch(ing), hesitation noise at the starts of engines starting but I'd not have a clue what it is, other than perhaps annoying.

Yes that makes complete sense.  I've use a spray on things you're not supposed to, or not supposed to help, but they have (perhaps more washing grit/debris out, I've no idea) but they were effective cures even after year(s) of use but I can understand the hesitation in this case.  The fine VW engineers would obviously have to have some very special solution to the mistake the belt manufacturer must have made and not them. 😁  But of course it could easily not be the belt anyway.

Yes you'd have to spray the entire belt, I wouldn't want to just spray part of it.

I'm not going to be spraying the belt but might mention it to the dealer. Did it relate to a specific size or age of engine Blue8793841? I might just be looking at the wrong cars - you need to search against a very specific model to bring up access to any tpis and then they only relate to that very specific model; the search criteria requires year, sales type (which dictates the market/model/trim/engine and output), engine code, gearbox code.

The noise I'm referring to is pretty distinct, appears at seconds 3-4 in both videos.

I've access until early afternoon and will have another go before then.
