Advice on lenses please

Featured Replies

I have a Kodak DX 6490, and i want to know is it worth the money buying a 52mm wide angle lense, a polarixing filter and a UV filter?

Also, can you explain what all these do and how they would change my daily photos??

Thanks

JD

A polarising filter will make blue skies really deep blue, and generally boost colour, it will also cut reflections from water and glass etc. A u.v filter is an ideal filter for landscape as it cuts out the u.v hase you sometimes get. Also it doesnt effect much else so it can be left on the lens as a protector.

edit: SkodaDan beat me to it:thumbup:

Hi JD

I'm bit confused as too what the 52mm wide angle lens is, as your camera should cover 38-380mm with its built in lens??

UV filter is inexpensive and can be left on the lens nearlyall the time, it protects the front element, anew filter is cheaper to replace, it also reduces haze in some shots.

A polarizer is a good filter to have, it basically removes reflections and can be a real benefit when photographing water, cars etc.

Hope this helps

Ahh the 52mm is NOT a lens it is an adaptor, just a hollow tube, it allows you screw on any 52mm diameter filter.

Have a good look round for prices first, although £12 including filter is OK.

For other filters search "loobylin" on ebay tons of filters at good prices, I ahve never had a problem with this seller.

UV filters are MUCH cheaper than polarizers, if you're seeing them at similar prices then something's up ;)

Whatever you go for, get multi-coated if you can and use a hood on the lens. It makes a world of difference believe me. You can leave a UV on the lens 24/7 if you wish (protection etc) but a Polarizer will lose you up to 2 stops of exposure allowing 1/4 of the light through, so take it off indoors (it needs sunlight to be effective anyway).

Does a UV filter make any difference on a digital camera? I've taken shots with and without it in place and I'm damned if I can tell any difference!

Nope....... but it can provide a first level of defence for your lense. Some peeps use them some don't.

I use one on every lense (except my 300mm f2.8 - too effin big:eek: ) and have done since 1975. rob.gif

Canon state that the weatherproofing on the 1 series cameras is only useful if a filter is fitted to the lense.

The choice is yours -
