ULEZ coming, petrol Superb options

Featured Replies

I have conceded at 6ft 5in and having owned three Superbs I can't downsize to an Octavia. We are not a good fit. So stick to what you know. However, as I contemplated the complexity of the (diesel) Greenline option, I discovered my home city of Cardiff is about to go ULEZ. So, I need to look at Superb petrol models. Any suggestions on which are the best models to consider? (I commute so fuel economy is a factor). Thanks.

Is a Euro 6 TDI out of your price or just out of the quest?

I'm in almost an identical situation to OP. Clearly more towns and cities are going down the ULEZ route (or something similar, e.g. Oxford). Glasgow has an outright ban on diesels which are not Euro 6, and they will fine drivers of non-compliant vehicles.

I've concluded that my best option is to put my 13 plate Skoda Superb (Elegance) in part exchange for a Euro 6 vehicle. This not my preferred option, but this appears to be the "direction of travel" (no pun intended!). I've shortlisted a few Skoda Superbs and am tempted by Laurin & Klement, although they are a smidgeon above my budget. It's only coming out of the kid's inheritance, though.  😉

Good luck with whatever you choose.

When is Cardiff introducing the new charge?

Normally fake news restricts itself to social media sites.

The small cc petrol tsi engines tug a Superb along really well and economy is generally great. I've just sadly sold my 2014 1.4tsi Superb mkII  which has been fabulous over the last near decade of ownership (I bought nearly new in 2015). It generally averaged late 40's mpg although 50+ mpg was possible on a gentle run. If just driving around town then mpg was late 30's / early 40's . My overall average mpg was about 46 mpg. I think the sweet spot re Superb small cc engines is the 1.4tsi EA211 in the Superb mkIII.

PS I'm 6ft 4" tall and also have problems fitting comfortably into various cars especially re B pillar position being too far forward and my elbows and knees are in the wrong position re arm rests/ banging into door furniture.

6'2 geordie here. I have the MK2 2.0 TSI. They are rare, but in terms of budget, you couldnt go wrong if you find a good one. Not very economical against the oil burners buuuuut 7.6 0-60 makes up for it.

Not suggesting this as a serious option, but for info the VR6 is ULEZ compliant (certainly in London at least)… 😉

Good luck with your search for a suitable replacement anyway. 👍🏻

Hello Stevie,

Same here. My 2012 Octavia has hit 250k and bits are starting to fail. Diesel cars are marked for charges all over and I believe it’ll just get worse. Looks like I’m in the market for a pertrol Octavia or Superb too.

Good luck

Hiya,

I’ve been running the VR6 Superb for a few years now. Great performance, really usable vehicle day to day.

The L & K models are the ones to go with as they tend to be really well specced from factory.

Performance is incredible, 0-60 around 6.0s, a little quicker than what is reported. In the wet, damp and greasy it’s hard to beat it’s all round performance, the 4x4 system allows it to keep up with much quicker Vag models.

Economy wise it’s a little more wallet crushing than most…small trips, around town you’ll be lucky to get around 28mpg. On bigger, longer journeys you’ll be getting around 34/35mpg and about 400 to 430 miles to a full tank.

Reliability has been spotless. Serviced every year regardless of mileage. There’s a few unique quirks, but what Vag model doesn’t??

Hope this helps.
