Suggested engine oil for mkIV

Featured Replies

What you think about this oil liqui moly top tec 6200 0w20?

Does is say that it meets the relevant VW spec?

That oil meets the recommended grade and standard (508 00/509 00) so should be fine.

I have already done a change with top tec 6200 and no regret. It's my first choice if there is stock available.

I have a 2021 RS TSI ( Australia delivery). Can I use VW 504 00/507 00 - 5W30  ( Castro Edge LL) ?

I know the super thin  0W20 is recommended but that's more for  emission/regulation target rather than long term engine health.

I still feel slightly uncomfortable with 0W 20 as well, especially for year round use, but I'm sticking with it at least for duration of the warranty. Having said that, I can't see that 5W 30 would be in any way harmful, in fact logically better in summer. The Castrol oil selector will state Edge LL IV 0W 20 since they will only comply with manufacturer's specs rather than risk liability for suggesting anything different.

The so called variable viscosities of modern FS oils intentionally replaces the traditional thinking of using heavier oil in summer temps and lighter in winter. For now, I'm prepared to go with it in favour of not compromising the warranty, but I remain sceptical about VW/SKODA motives which are probably more about delivering regulated emissions and claimed efficiencies, as you say.

FWIW I did use Edge 5W 30 in my Mk7 Golf with no issues, same engine as in my Octavia which specifies 0W 20.

They do say you can use other oils but will have higher emissions.

Like you  I'm a little  tempted to use the 5W30 I have  for the Mk4 over summer months.

My other car Subaru Brz with high compression use 0W20 too but I chose to use  5W20 after its break in period for winter months and will use 5W30 over summer with 6 monthly change instead of the factory 12 mth interval.

We're on the same page in real terms. In our region, along with certain others, 0 weight is unnecessarily low for winter and 30 is more realistic for summer IMO.

There is a reasonable argument for regional variations to the globally prescribed 0W 20, but the VW Group doesn't seem too interested in finessing that.

I'm using 0w20 at the minute, think I may sway to 0w30 in the future. Haven't seen any oil loss yet but I've only done 1000 miles in the car. I'm in the UK so most of the year it's pretty cool and can get cold in the winter. I certainly wouldn't be using it in Australia, I'd go for 5w30 long life 3.

this is the oil that the shop gave me to add, I have 8K km and added already 1,3 liter  😞

0w 30 FS III could be used.   But then there is location location location and there can be climate differences with Australia and parts of Europe / UK.

Who knew oil was a thing. My hybrid UK) vrs 2021 going in for a few bits, I’ll ask what they think..

What they think if a Main Dealer is what they are supposed to follow / think.  The recommended oil is the VW 508 00 509 00 so 0w 20 FS.    Even though it is long life oil and you are having fixed servicing oil and filter.     You can if you want have VW 504 00 / 507 00 spec used or even VW 502 00 for fixed service regimes.   They might go 'no way'.   So those that never knew oil was a thing should maybe go with what Professionals say.    Not as they might do in their own cars.
