Well after the first guy getting done for 105mph and a 6 month ban!

The other guy is up in court at the end of the month, he's already got 12 points - they let him off last time as he needed his car to see his kids. The silly old fool got caught doing 46mph in a 40mph, we drive past the same camera everyday - for 2 years!

Its 50 miles a day, 250 miles a week. Typically I get 30 - 35mpg. Normally I stick

I think legally you can only charge for their share of the cost of running the car with them in it. Any more than that and it is regarded as driving for hire or reward, and can be a licence/ tax/ insurance problem.

You can't charge anywhere near what you would claim during work (i.e. 40p per mile)

You would have to work out how much it costs to run the car over the year, and then per mile. Then they pay their share, i.e. if there are 3 people including yourself in the car, then you each pay costs per mile/ 3.

Work out your average yearly costs for:

Tyres

Servicing

Depreciation

per year, and then divide it by the yearly mileage (average). Then add your cost per mile for fuel.

How much should I charge them? Someone at work suggested

Well move in with her when you want to.

Don't just stay wher eyou are. Sort things with SWMBO, then say look lads I'm moving in with her, and thats that, sorry but you will have to make your own arrangement from "date" making sure you give them about a months notice.

They can't complain then, not that they have any right to.

I drive a mate to work and since I am going that way anyway he just pays half the fuel cost at an up front agreed price per week.

thats my plan, don't want any problems from SWMBO ;).

Personnally I think they should have thought about speeding as its not just them that it effects!

They've offered to pay 80% of my fuel bill, which they've worked out to be £5.60 a day £28 a week.

Comments Please.

That means they calculate the full fuel bill at £35/week.

Assuming you split the fuel three ways, their two thirds share would be £23.33.

So you are getting £4.66 per week (less than £1.00 a day between two of them) towards depreciation, insurance, wear and tear, servicing etc.

Send them a bus timetable!

Edit - Have you tried one of the cost of motoring calculators mentioned in the other thread yet?

I do a 60 mile daily trip in a diesel and get paid about £20 per week.

TBH sometimes i win in terms of the fuel and sometimes he wins in fuel, depends on pump prices.

If the traffic is good that is a fair price as you can crusie at 65mph, however if the traffic is heavy you will use far more fuel than that I would say. Now if you add to that the fact that you were doing a car share and they should be covering more than 100% of the fuel, becuase you are racking up the miles and driving when they would have done.

If you are not good mates with them I'd be half tempted to say sorry guys tough ****.

One person said to my mate that £20/week was a lot, but I had shown the guy my fuel book with how much fuel I used weekly and he also knew the trains cost £12 per day and are a lot less convienient and forgiving of a oversleep.

What exactly are they offering? £28 a week, every week, or £28 each for 1 in every 3 weeks?

Basically how much will you end up with in total each 3 weeks? From Alex's calculations you should be getting £100 in total every 3 weeks.

Colleagues or not I'd be inclined to tell them to shove it. :finger: Its not just the cost, what about the inconvenience of having to do all the driving now? I'm guessing this is travelling in the rush hour which can be quite stressful. You signed up to share the motoring costs not be the chaffuer for a pair of numpties. If I were in their position I'd be doing everything I could to keep you sweet - petrol and then some more for your effort. At least

MY LV insurance booklet says that accepting payments from passengers as part of a car-sharing arrangement will not affect your insurance if they are being given a lift for social or similar purposes........and any money received does not produce a profit. So you should be looking to your passengers to pay their proportionate share of the overall running costs of your car - including the insurance which they would not hesitate to claim against in the event of injury - and not the petrol alone.

If they're not your friends, screw 'em.

Do what you want to do and move, or fleece the living hell out of them and enjoy free motoring. Either way, there'll be a tactful solution to keeping them sweet because they don't owe you anything...

I wouldn't include the insurance in calculations as thats a fixed cost that you will pay anyway.

Only charge for extra expenses incurred as a result of the extra mileage , so servicing , fuel and depreciation

Move in with SWMBO and f*ck em. They were the ones speeding and there is no reason you should change your life around them

Bugger that, I'd include everything from petrol, insurance, tax, depreciation, servicing, consumables all the way down to screenwash and maybe even the air freshener. That lot would probably take you toward

Not as bad as it first sounds then. So you'd get

Did you try one of the calculators, and if so what did that come out at?

tell you what after looking over it again its worse than was first suggested.

One of the guys girlfriends is off work till august, so they'll use her as a backup plan just in case I'm off sick, holiday or whatever.

But once she goes back to work, they'll get a taxi into work at a cost of £25 a day as they need to get into work, just in case I'm off sick, holiday or what ever.

And they expect me to give them a lift home at half the day rate (£2.80) if I don't go home they'll get a lift back from one of the guys mum's, and give her £10 - so thats £35 a day they are prepared to pay for 2 month till the other guys gets his license back...

Think I'm right in telling them to ram it?
