Passenger/nearside wing mirror fault checked loom and wires and all OK

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I picked up a 2013 Skoda fabia Elegance a few weeks ago to use as my sons first car. It was a private sale and at a very good price. On inspection I noticed that the powered passenger wing mirror was not working when using the mirror adjuster on the drivers side. The drivers wing mirror works fine.

I purchased anyway as its a very clean example with a full service history at a very competitive price. I figured I'd factor in the savings to fix the wing mirror.

I've searched and looked at lots of posts on here and the common reason is broken cables in thr door loom.

I took the door panel off this afternoon and check all the wiring in the look and all the wires are fine (no obvious breaks or Splits. I unplugged the connector into the car itself and inspected all the pins etc. I then removed all the insulation tape and inspected all of the wiring behind the door panel (through the rubber grommet) again it was all good.

In anticipation I had purchased a pre-owned wing mirror from ebay and plugged it in, again it didn't work.

I even swapped out the original fuse for a brand new one (just covering all bases) again it didn't work.

The electric window, speaker, etc all work fine on the passenger side, it's just the mirror.

My next point of call would be the actual joystick that controls the mirror, I guess there's a small chance it could be faulty?

I may need to end up getting an auto electrician to have a look, but would prefer if possible to remedy myself.

Has anyone else had this issue where the wires and loom appear to be fine?

Check driver's side wiring, I think you may find a relavant broken wire or two there.

Ah... I hadn't thought of that  thank you, I'll go and have a look in a bit and will report back.

Thank you so much! 3 broken wires now soldered back together and heat shrink wrapped and a working passenger wing mirror!

Nice one.

Thanks for posting @andyknoxville. I have same problem. £60 diagnosis said broken wires in passenger loom but interested to hear yours was in the drivers side wiring from the switch.

Driver's side wire breaks tend to be more common simply because that door is used every time the car is driven.

Other doors' usage levels - and so wear tear on their wiring - will vary with usage patterns.

Could well have breaks both sides though.

Keep an eye open for repeat related symptoms or better still visually check your repair and the other wires frequently.

Why? A soldered repair at a point of failure caused by flexion is very likely to fail in the future through embrittlement and also having a rigid section, other wires may already be on their way out.

You can buy repair kits consisting of the connectors and pre-terminated wires very cheaply, I have one on the shelf anticipating future problems, I recommend you do so too.

Editted. If you enlarge the photo you can see that in addition to the 3 now repaired broken wires the blue one at the top is already well on its way out with the insulation fractured meaning that all the flexion will be concentrated on the exposed unsupported conductors.

Nothing wrong with your repair per sé, its exactly what I would do if I hadn't already bought a repair kit.

Thank you for the above and pre-planned is pre-warned! Can I ask where you got the repair kit from please? I think I might pick one or two up as well as we now have two of the same cars in the family now.

Useful topic thanks. My wing mirrors are not adjusting and this could be the fault. As I have warranty I am hoping that will cover the work.

Thanks for the photo very helpful.
