Disconnecting battery while on holiday

Featured Replies

I am going away on holiday for three weeks on Monday and in the past when I’ve gone away for this length of time, I’ve come home to a flat battery. This time it’s going to be parked in an underground car park which will be difficult to get another car into to jumpstart it if it doesn’t start when I get back, so I was thinking about disconnecting the battery.

Is this easy to do, and would it cause me any problems when I reconnect it in three weeks time?

My mechanic has said it will probably be okay after three weeks, but it definitely hasn’t in the past, and I have no idea why it was to lose the battery so quickly as I’ve got a new one not so long ago. Therefore. I’d rather just be safe than sorry and disconnect it, if it won’t cause any problems.

Many thanks in advance, I have a Skoda Fabia II 1.4 TDi 2008

You'd want to be very confident that you can unlock driver's door mechanically with the key so that you can get to the bonnet release when you get back and want to reconnect the battery.

No other issues occur to me.

Is this for LH drive with the hood release on the drivers side?

Didn't notice OP's location, and not sure if bonnet release is accessible irrespective of which door is open on a LHD mk2 Fabia. Good spot.

Alternatively, consider a jump starter.  Mine has proved its worth on a couple of occasions.

Thanks for the link. I live in Tenerife though. 😅 next time I travel I’ll get one. 👍

Thanks for all responses. I checked that my key could unlock the door after disconnecting negative before closing the bonnet, so all should be fine. Just need to google how to reconnect for when I get back now. 😅😊

Just the same as you did when you reconnected today.
