I seem to have a vacuum leak (rough idle). Anyone had similar problems?

Are you attempting to trace the leak?   Are you sure it is that, and not the plugs, could or some other issue,?  Have you read the fault codes if any logged and for misfires?

Thanks for your message I have not had any fault codes read yet I am just trying to identify the area before committing it to the garage. The car runs fine it's just a slight issue with the tick over. Weather permitting tomorrow I plan to investigate further, I just wanted to check if this is an issue common to the 2.1tsi engine. Thanks again

Check to see if the pcv valve is broken or pulled off where it goes into the rocker cover. When the technicians replace the air filter they lift the air filter cover and it puts leverage on the pipe which either pulls off the pcv valve or breaks it where it enters the rocker cover. Its dark at the moment but I will take pics in the daylight.

Thanks again great advice I have noticed that there's some evidence of oily leakage around it , but not sure how fresh it is, does the valve pull out or do you have to remove the rocker cover to change it if it is broken ? I don't have a workshop manual so I am in the dark on this one.

If it is the valve I think I am going to have to pay a visit to the garage but to keep costs down I would like to have a go myself.

Thank you for your help.

The stem which fits into the rocker box is barbed so pulling it out might be tricky but a spike could be used to prise it out. This is where opinions differ. Mine was broken after a dealer main service when the air filter was replaced but it was a few months after when I smelt fumes in the cabin. I took the car to an independent VAG dealer who was going to push the remnants of the old valve into the rocker box ' in situ' while pushing in the new. I baulked at that idea and took it to another independent who removed the necessary engine parts to gain access to the valve and they fished out the broken bits (so they said). Have a go and see if your valve pulls out with no hassle.

Thanks again for getting back to me I think your explanation is spot on I have looked today and found the valve seems to be either extremely loose or it has snapped.

I think I'll get it checked in and sorted as soon as possible.

Thank you for your kind help and advice.

Muzzy.
