WRC comes to Ireland in 2007

Featured Replies

I read in Autosport this week that there is talk of selection coming back to the WRC. Think the last time we say this we 1993. It means that the teams pick which 10 rallies they want to enter in. it means if this goes through that not all the big boys will come to Ireland. Maybe none will come seeing as its a grenn event and they have not set up data.

 This could be very bad

Not sure when we will know for sure.

It is highly unlikely that all the big teams will come to Ireland - Rally GB is soo close and its a new rally - with, believe it or not, little public support (There were only 6000 ppl at the march '06 event)

I hear what your saying BUT I reckon you could be surprised who

Fair comment.

Spectator pens have only come into being as a way to pay for events.

Thats not entirely fair or true. British H&S legislation and the litigation worries facing events together with the higher standards we seem to have to measure ourselves against are the main drivers behind having designated spectator areas.

Most of the spectator "pens" on WRGB arent exactly penning people in at all - the one on halfway near Dixies for example was a mile and a half long!

Another aspect of it is that at this level of spectator numbers you have to define maximum spectator numbers to the HSE and local authorities for each location' date=' which means you have to put some kind of structure and ticketing in place to try to even out the numbers - and even to discourage people from going to the most popular spots. In additon this impacts on numbers of marshals required etc.

Spectating at an Irish Rally.... hmm..... Find a tree. Climb it.

It does depend on whereabouts on a stage you go, but generally I've nearly been able to touch the cars as they fly by.

I think that the organisers will have to be far more stingent on the WRC round than on the other events that side of the water. Firstly the FIA delegates will certainly call a halt to stages if theres too many spectators to be controllable or people in more dangerous areas. I also think that the sheer volume of spectators will be a factor and that the organisers will go for designated spectator areas to keep things controllable but also to keep any kind of traffic flow going so the rally doesnt just get snarled up!

Paul..

(WRGB Marshal Liaison and also likely to be marshalling on 2007 Rally Ireland)

 fair play to you...its a tough and sometimes thankless job ;) Maybe we'll see ya at the rally

Its also a really rewarding and enjoyable time as well - especially if theres a group of you up for a laugh!

TBH my WRGB role is the biggest thing as it takes up probably 10 days of my time through the year preparing and doing the newsletters, mailshots, staffing etc, plus the 5 days around WRGB... but its worth it I reckon.

Doing work with WRGB I take it you know Ronan Morgan ? he's heavily involved in Rally Ireland along with Sean O'Connor.

Yes Ronan was involved with WRGB before his involvement with Rally Ireland. He did a good job of "leveraging" his contact with Peter Hain when Peter moved from Wales to Ireland and keeping Ronan in paid employment :-)
