I've never driven a 1.6, but of all the ones I've had, I reckon that either the 170 2.0 TDi or 150 1.4 TSi (unless you need an auto) are the best suited.

Feel free to disagree entirely ! I just had a relative's Fabia 1.2 TSi to sell and it's a great engine but reminded me that in a heavier Yeti it did a good job unless you needed to boot it.

I doubt that many contributors will have driven Yetis with all the engine options you list, perhaps it would be better to invite comments from people with experience of engines that they do not recommend?

I can both recommend and not recommend the 2.0 TDi, in standard 108hp form its just about peppy enough with a 6 speed box if you use the gears but it can give a false sense of power, it is very lacking in mid speed range overtaking situations, however with a remap to a claimed 180hp which I believe is really the stock 170hp map it is superb, far more torque and also has a much larger usable rev range so the above limitation is no longer an issue even if you are not in the ideal gear.

For towing it is unmatched, that is just as much about the vehicle as it is the power plant, they compliment each other.

Interesting, can you give us a link to that?

I've owned 2x 1.2TSi, 2.0TDi 170 and one of the last 2.0TDi 150.  I've also had several 1.2TSi's in other models and a few 2.0TDi 140's.

The winner by a fair margin is the 2.0TDi 150.  It's the later EA288 engine and feels more responsive and refined than the old 140/170 EA189.

1.2 TSi is fine around town but runs out of steam on motorways and fast A roads and economy really drops away with speed.

I’ve had 2 1.2 TSi DSG’s and averaged 44.5 MPG over 100,000 miles plus. To be fair my 2017 Yeti was more economical than the 2012 version but not by much. 1.2 TSi is great around town and good on long motorway trips with just 2 up and luggage. I think with 4 adults and baggage it would cope fine but economy would suffer and performance dip.

My 1.2 TSi (2013 model) has returned 41.4 mpg over its 11 years, much of which has been short local trips. It's now routinely returning between 43 and 44mpg based on the average of 5 brim-to-brim fills, so much the same as Expatman's 1.2 TSIs. Most of the time it's just me and management in the car and the performance has never disappointed me but in the past I've been on holiday with four adults and all their luggage and whilst some of the hills in the West Country were "challenging" I never felt we weren't going to make it. At those times I've wondered whether the 1.4TSi might have suited me better but they were like hens' teeth. But most importantly - it's never let me down.

"Which engine suits the Yeti the best"? The one that doesn't let you down and on that criteria and based on posts I've seen over the years on this forum that rules out the 1.8TSi straight away!"

I suppose that re-mapping a 1.2 to 130/140 bhp  is another option if the 1.4 is rare ?

As my other half has just managed to average 58mpg over a 300m round trip (Lots of 50mph motorway roadworks), I definitely nominate the 2.0 TDi 150. 😇

Just over 200 miles at the weekend 62.7mpg.

But as Prezafab says, lots of motorway roadworks.

I think that's pretty good as the aerodynamics aren't great. I had an Octavia vrs 4x4 tdi (184) in 2018 and that struggled to do much more than 43mpg. There is even someone on You Tube criticising the latest 200ps (£50,000) tdi superb 4x4 which has a combined figure of 47.

I've owned several Yeti's and also had a 1.8 TSi Octavia.

The 110 TDi (2WD) was far and away the most economical, but in my view the best was a Shark Mapped 140 TDi (4WD) which was responsive, reliable and still economical.

Not a fan of 1.2 TSi or 1.6 TDi in a Yeti, although the smaller TSi worked well in a couple of Rapids.

The 170 TDi was strangely unimpressicve, although I'm told pairs well with DSG.

Given an aversion to automated manuals all my VAG cars have been manual (thus far).
