Did a tiny bit of weight saving

Featured Replies

Got bored last night, took the back seats out of my car & rear parcel shelf and went for a spin.

My god, the difference is incredible. It feels so much lighter and more chuckable.

Put them back in when I got back and went to the shops for some Milk and it felt very slow in comparison.

How much do the rear seats weigh?

By taking the rear seats, spare wheel and tool kit out, you save at least 75 kg's

It does make a hell of a difference, and its noisier too. Therefore, when you put it all back in again, it feels much slower due to the lack of noise as well as the extra weight.

Havn't you learnt you don't need to take the seats out, just fold them flat :P;)

Does that reduce drag?

Being serious for a moment, every 5kg saved is the equivalent of a 1bhp increase if it is sprung weight, if it's unsprung it's 2.5kg per bhp

HTH

Was it semi-skimmed milk that you went to the shop for?

Full fat gives an extra 5bhp IIRC

What about my golf clubs/ shoes in the boot?? would they make much of a difference?

SWMBO won't let me store them in the house, and the shed is already full of crap!!

So, on that basis, if you had a set of OZ ultraleggera's (4.7 kgs I think) then compared to the standard wheels (must be about 10- say 9.7kgs) you would have equivalent to an 8 bhp increase, using the same idea, by taking out the spare wheel and back seats, you'd be looking at 15 bhp on top of that again:eek: Coool! p.s Where are those spanners!!)

Quite true

Do a search on recent threads on here, I posted a link up for just this sort of modification. Thread is called "I know its old". Very f unny but shows what can be achieved :D

Hmm I'm now thinking about doing this for the my trip over to the ring, on the plus side it will allow me to bring back more booze! :D

Leave your spare in ;)

You will find the car very very and i mean VERY light at the rear under hard braking, so have a little play without the weight in first

It would be a laugh to try taking everything unnecessary out of the car one day.

I wonder how much weight could be removed from an Octavia going for the full strip-down and how much by going for a more realistic excess reduction programme?

Actually, it might be a start to remove all of the junk in the boot!

Not a lot I can strip from my car :(

I believe a certain Red Baron put his Octy vRS on quite a substantial diet and it made a massive difference :D

Passenger seat must be a good 25kgs - only 4 bolts.

Glove box - 5 wee screws and another 5kgs or so.

Carpet mats all round - 5kgs?

Have a **** before you go out - 2kgs?

Where do you stop! I was thinking about driving naked too!

What's the legal position on tyre foam instead of a spare wheel?

There isn't one so far as the UK is concerned. If you have a spare wheel it must be road legal. You're not obliged to carry one however.

iirc.... rotating mass weighs less as it spins...SOME MORE WEIGHT SAVING :D:thumbup:
