Oil consumption in VRS TSI 2016

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have read the manual and can see it states that depending on the style of driving the car can use up to 1l of oil every 1000km. This just seems to be a 'general' statement in the manual and doesn't seem to be specific for a particular CC or even fuel type.

Basically I had an oil change performed around 1500miles ago (5w40 502) and went to check the oil today (warmed up the car and then waited for a few minutes after turning off) the oil reading was barely on the bottom of the dipstick.

Around 500ml later I'm getting a reading about half way up the dipstick.

Is this type of oil consumption 'normal' or expected for a EA888 Gen3 (2016 VRS 230) Previous owner looks to have stuck to yearly servicing (albeit it 5w30 oil)

Regards

You misread the manual i think.

?

Did you check the Oil level cold and then at operating temperature after the Service was done to be sure enough oil was in?

If not you have no idea how much oil it has used since the service.

They have said for decades. all engines, petrol or diesel, 44 kw up, 3,4,5,6,8,10 or 12 cylinders.

May use 0.5 litres in 1,000 km (621 miles) so 1 litre in 2,000 km.

Once you have enough oil in when cold, it ie not a Warm check you want, it is at Normal Operating Temperate.  so 90*oC indicated or so.

VW502 00 is for Fixed Servicing, so 9,400 miles / 12 months with TSI,s.  It is not Long Life Oil like VW504 00 / 507 00

Sorry yes you are correct 0.5 in 1000km it states.

Yes sorry I meant normal operating temperature as my 'warm check' comment

A few minutes idling does not get the oil to normal operating temperature.

& did you check when serviced if someone else did it?

  • Author

I didnt say I waited for a few minutes at idle, I checked the oil temperature using the maxidot, turned the engine off and then waited for a few minutes before checking the level.

Yes, I checked the level after it was serviced previously

So was it up at About 90 degrees indicated?    It does not matter really.   What matters is the way you checked it after the service and then when you found it low was the same way.  So you now know it has used quite a bit of oil.    Best get it to that area A on the Dipstick when at normal operating temp and see how it stays over the next 500 and 1000 miles.

Thanks ootohere, yes I took it for a run and made sure the indicated oil temp on the maxi dot was above 90 degrees. I parked level turned the engine off and waited for say 5 minutes before checking. I put around 400ml in after checking the level (while at operating temp) and it seems to be around half way/just over. So I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes.

Unfortunately it kind of falls in line with what the manual says if they say up to 0.5l for every 1000km.

Appreciate your help.

1 litre in 1,200 miles is far too high and oil consumption for a TSI.

(It was even too high for 1.4 TSI Twin Charger Excessive Oil users and 0.3 litres in 1,000 km could get a new engine fitted with cars in warranty.)

The only reason oil consumption should be higher in the UK conditions of no extremes in temps or track use is if you are doing lots of cold starts and short runs.

Oh wow, doesn't sound good 😞 I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes.

To be fair I am doing alot of short runs, that's why I moved away from a diesel

Worrying that it seems even the G3 version may be prone to the earlier Ea888 oil consumption issues. @s88urd what mileage is on the odo?

  • Author

Just over 87k miles on it

My 1.8 EA888 Gen3 uses at most 0.5L in the 8,000 miles between annual services, so I would say there's no general problem with the EA888.

I'd suggest having a compression test done. How long have you owned it?

Just coming up to 3 months now.

Havent noticed any other issues, ill top it up and keep an eye on it over the next 1k miles or so and if its still bad ill get a compression test booked.

I drive a 2016 vrs tsi wagon ,and change the oil every 12 months and dont need any top ups inbetween 👍

ok cheers mate,

Ive taken it to the garage who have made sure its at max now, after running it up to operating temp and letting it sit for a few minutes.

Ill just have to keep an eye on it and see what happens.

Thanks all

The gen 2 was prone to control ring clogging. With disastrous consequences.

The gen 3 is better. Not immune. Check for oil leaks, replace pcv fine oil separator. Check turbo play if you can. If its none of those it has to be consuming in the CC.   Compression tests not conclusive of oil consumption in early stage of problems.

If you've bought from a dealer decide what to do before 6 months.

Sorry to say I'm a bit like @Mickvrs220 in that neither my 2015 vRS 220 (stage 1 to c.310bhp), nor my current 2018 Golf GTI 230, use a drop of oil, so from my experience, no, it's not normal.

What miles though? It's not gen 2 scale problem but if you search you will find documented cases.  I'm at 89k miles in a Golf R.  I would say it uses 1 litre per 3000 miles. A small amount of the loss is due to cam cover sealant degradation but certainly not that quantity.

I've ordered a new pcv valve so will get that fitted soon.

I have already informed the garage (they only gave me 3 months warranty) but me informing them is within the 3 months if that makes sense.

Mileage has been recorded now and confirmed dipstick is at max so will check it every week or so for any drop.

Yes, forget the written warranty if it gets too hard. They're often worth little more than the paper they're printed on. Will have limits, conditions etc. You have consumer statutory warranty for the first 6 months, at least and up to 6 years. Much clearer though for first 6 months.

25k on the vRS and 36k on the GTI, so both well shy of the OP's 87k.  I'd had both cars since new as well, so had the benefit of knowing their history (the vRS was traded in for the GTI).  Of course we can find documented cases, I was simply commenting from my experience, and I don't think the EA888 G3 is particularly notorious for oil consumption. My vRS's turbo grenaded itself at 21k miles and there was an initial question as to whether it had taken the engine with it.  It hadn't, and the Skoda tech commented at the time that they're a good, robust engine.

I've had cars that would put the Amoco Cadiz to shame in terms of oil usage, but the EA888's are not one of them.

Bit of an update with this.

Ive now owned the vehicle for just shy of 6 months and covered around 4k miles.

The garage collected the car from me, drained the oil, measured and filled it back up and then covered over 600 miles in 2 days.

They then drained the oil and measure the difference which was apparently 150ml. They then filled it back up to max and delivered it back to me.

I got a bit of a telling off by them as apparently, I shouldnt be using 5w40 504 (but I didnt really want to argue)

Fast forward to today, I checked the oil and after about 490 miles the dipstick was showing half way again.

The plugs were pulled in October and I am a bit worried about this one:

The car is booked in tomorrow at a garage to have the plugs pulled and a borescope inspection to see if any oil residue is present on the top of the pistons.

The garage (who supplied the vehicle) have just contacted me saying that all EA888 Gen 3 engines use this amount of oil, however I am not convinced.

Based on personal experience, and 61k miles across two Gen 3's, I beg to differ 🙄

Agree with gaz ,not sure what the garage are talking about .
