Help required for my Mum! -

Featured Replies

Well done to you and your brother for sorting your mums VW.

Your brother's mate is a big beer drinker!  They reckon you should also change the seal, but I wonder if that's necessary if you're careful with it and it's not too old or too much use  I also wonder if the throttle body computer settings would sort themselves but given your mum will be driving best to clear all and everything so it runs as she expects the second she starts driving it, as is very reasonable.

As long as the s/h one isn't from the same batch as your mum's car it should be fine for a good number of years.

Tell your brother to keep in with his mate as you might need access to a VCDS type tool again.

Thanks for reporting back, all the information and outcome.  Good luck.

Hi Forum ...... i'm back

The 2nd hand Throttle Body is doing well in Mum's Fabia!

I've started taking the other one apart ..... and would like to know how I do it fully

I've took off the metal clips

Removed the end plate

Removed the free gear

Now I'm stuck ..... what do I need to do get the black plastic gear off?

I think the fault with the Throttle Body is a broken spring as the gears look in great condition

If I can fix it it can either be sold to a forum member who may need a cheap repair or can be used for a spare for Mum's Fabia

So.....

I've found a video on Youtube

Next step is to remove the throttle plate (Metal circular thing) by removing the 2 x Torx screws ........ then comes the weird bit

You have to drill the throttle body from underneath with a 2mm drill bit ...... once drilled you can tap out the holding pin ........ then the central shaft will slide out

See images:-
Top - circled green (where the pin is) - Bottom - circled run and arrowed (Where to drill)

Once the shaft is out this will give access to the spring

Guessing further posts to come

Keep it going, you might just have accidentally started a good little pastime/sideline!

Good Luck.

UPDATE:

Drilled a hole in the underside of the Throttle Body (This was quite simple..... used a metal drill bit in a normal battery drill)

Tapped out the securing pin and cap

Unscrewed the two torx screws for the metal circle

Remove the metal disk

This will allow the centre shaft to be removed

NOW WE KNOW THE ISSUE:

So the issue is a BROKEN SPRING! ...... so the next questions ...........  can I get a replacement spring and how much is it going to cost

Unless it's just the photo that looks a special spring, i.e. not one you might get from buying a box of various springs.  As such it seems pretty poor that it should be of a build quality that breaks in such a short time but that's costings in car manufacture (and manufacturing generally) in the past decades, a race to the bottom of price and quality and the throwaway attitude.  Unfortunately I've no idea about a reliable replacement, perhaps if you could get one out of a scrap/recycled earlier (or even perhaps later if it was a batch fault) then it might outlast the car the throttle body could be fitted to.  For Dealerships and VW it's more profitable to fit new throttle bodies as replacements at their customer's expense.
