Octavia RS oil filter problem

Featured Replies

I did a DIY service on my RS at the weekend, the only problem is that I couldn't get the oil filter off :thumbdwn: even with a filter removal tool.

It seems to be welded on. I guess the dealer that did the last service didn't oil the rubber ring when putting the filter on. I now have 2 nice big dents in the filter, and wondering how in hell I will get it off.

Any suggestions?

The tool you used, was it a large socket type that goes over the end of the filter or a strap wrench type?

Strap wrench is usually the way to go sometimes with a bit of tube over the end for some more leverage:mad: .

And if a strap or chain wrench fails, hammer a big screw-driver through the old filter. It's messy, but it really works.

i was more concerned when mine came off with my hands

I have a really nice tool.

It's a mole grip wrench with a huge "mouth" on it specially designed to fit oil filters. I bought it for a fiesta with an oil filter in an impossible place but nothing has beening it yet touch wood.

It's a metal socket attachment with a canvas strap. I reckon I will just have to have a few more weetabix tomorrow morning, and give it another shot. Failing that, the long screw driver will get an airing!

Big pipe grips normally do the trick... failing that go to your local Halfrauds and buy the "cup" type oil filter remover.....it fits around the top of the filter a bit like a socket

Thanks Phil, no Halfords here in the wilds of the West coast of Ireland, but will try local motor factors. The tool I used is a bit rubbish, which doesn't help.

The canvas strap things are crap IMHO when the filter has got stuck on.

I got my oil filter wrench tool from a local motor factor for about £10

Should have said that I've never had a problem shifting an oil filter since I got a chain wrench, which actually tightens itself round the filter more the harder you have to pull it to turn the filter.

Chain wrench is the way to go - actually bites into the metal of the filter :thumbup:

Failing which, BFO screwdriver and a hammer :D:D:D

BTW, where in the wild west are you? I'm going over to Ireland for my hols in 2 weeks :):):)

Co. Mayo, near Castlebar (about 11 miles from Westport).

Will try the chain wrench, and have a BFO screw driver if all else fails
