With the diesel engine' date=' its constantly returning un-used fuel to the tank... which gets HOT.... eg 70-100C hot.

so what does your caclulation say about the temp rising 90c?

thats why a car can be noticeably more lazy when the tank is almost empty.

After intake temps, fuel temps are the next big issue with diesel engines as theres only a tiny little heatsink on the bottom of the car to cool the returnline... its useless!

If you dont belive me... go out for a drive and get some VAGCOM logs ;)[/quote']

I often find that on a hot day when filling up from empty, having driven around for hours, the fuel is literally steaming as the vapour is ejected from the filler when the fuel goes in.

I use the nipple tweak to get an extra gallon in. Time is money and time going to and standing in a garage costs me more than any weight penalty will.

To offset the weight penalty, I'm going to remove the spare tire and toolbox and carry a can of puncture sealer - it works out at about 15kg - a bit more than any extra fuel. :)

If I go on a diet, I can actually gain several hp!!!!!

10 litres of extra fuel works out at about 200km extra driving before the joy of refuelling:rolleyes:

Cheers

If you use the nipple tweak now, spend 10 minutes doing the ventectomy once and for all, and enjoy hassle-free filling to the brim until you sell the car.

So from Ross @ all the advise is that it IS safe on diesel (ONLY) ?

If so I'll probably do this mod ;)

Update -

Call me mad (all my best friends do!) but I've been using the Diesel-only ventectomy mod now in ambient temps between 30-47 degrees indicated without the slightest problems.

The filling station is 0.5km from home, and I've filled up and driven home and parked a couple of times.

Cheers:thumbup:

Not at all mad & not surprised here ! :D:thumbup:

Personally over the summer I have ONLY been using this trick when I know I will be using a least 5L straight off after filling. In the winter I do it all the time.

I used the 'vent' trick last night on my second fill up. Was easier than i thought. Got 41.9 litres in and the light had just come on which according to the manual is 7litres so that makes 48.9litres. Probably could have got more in but it was my first time so i was a little scared! :o:rofl::thumbup:

It's amazingly easy to do - I did Xav's car at TRAX.

open fuel door

Torx screw left of cap

open cap

wiggle door rearward

use a short flatblade screwdriver to depress the slot on the right while pressing in the nipple with force

out she comes

remove the black guts

slide back the white insides.

It took precisely the same amount of time as Xav took going off for a leak.....:D

:D

I've been brimming mine since Trax, and haven't noticed any problems with over-expanding.

Of course, whilst this should be OK with diesel, do NOT do it with UL/SUL fuel!
