Battery light flickering.

Featured Replies

2009 Skoda Roomster 1.4 BXW engine. 80000 miles.

The battery light has started flickering when the engine is running.

There is no charge getting to the battery whether the light is on or off.

Is this likely to be either the brown or blue wire going to the alternator or something else?

I have checked the battery connections and the earth points.

Blue wire, or alternator voltage regulator failed, or brushes worn too short?

Seems very low mileage for alternator trouble, is the car used only occasionally?

It gets used two or three times a week including weekends when it gets a good run.

I've been to Cornwall twice this year racking up 1800 miles and the car never missed a beat.

If it's the blue wire does that involve getting under the car to fix it?

Now I'm in my seventies it's not something I look forward to anymore!

Hi, which side of Swindon are you? I'm just at Highworth; wouldn't mind having a look for you.

Blue wire would probably require looking from beneath, yes.

If it's similar to mk1 Fabia, there's a plug/socket interconnection near the starter motor, that commonly is the source of breaks in one or both wires.

I am behind the shops on Beechcroft road just along from Kings down.

You help would be much appreciated and rewarded.

Seems pretty close.  I'll send you a private message with a phone number and some suggestions of when I may be able to visit for a look.

Do you have a way of charging the battery in the meantime?

Check the charge output directly off the alternator to confirm alternator or wiring problem.

Thank for the response.

It's all sorted now thanks to the brilliant response from breezy_pete.

There was no output from the alternator so it was swapped for a reconditioned unit by Pete.

Many thanks again to  Pete.
