Rain sensor confusion.

Featured Replies

Hi!

Recently I had to replace the windscreen of my 2015 Octavia 1.4 G-Tec. The workshop told me by VIN I need the windscreen with rain sensor option. To my experience my car does not have auto wipers. The workshop guy showed me the sensor on my windscreen behind the rearview mirror to prove that they are not ripping me off for more expensive windscreen. I have read now different topics about that and being confused - is the auto wiper just a matter of VCDS programming or are there different sensors existing (Rain Light Sensor and Rain Moisture Sensor) and what's the difference of them?

If I have sensor installed, but currently have interval wiping - can I activate auto wiping by VCDS I own? If not - what is the function of current rain sensor?

Thanx for bringing the clarity in advance!

Hi, I will check my MY16 (late 2015) Octavia shortly - I don't remember if there is an option in the infotainment system. Just checked, go to "Vehicle settings" scroll down to "Wipers & mirrors" there are check-boxes for enabling functions - this is for Amundsen MIB2 system, but other infotainment systems should be similar.

Hi!

I quite don't understand the question... Of course I switch the stalk to second position. My car wiper control stalk has 4 positions like all VAG cars: Stop, intermittent (or auto), On and Fast. If I put it into second position, it wipes intermittently (interval can be adjusted by regulator on the stalk), no matter if it rains or not. My first question is: what for is the Rain Sensor, when there is no automatic rain wiping function? My second question is: Can it be enabled by coding it via VCDS? I have read, that there is two types of sensors: Rain, light and humidity sensor and Rain and light Sensor. They say, that auto wiper needs the RLHS (first), otherwise second is installed. What is the difference of them and what is the purpose of RLS if it does not control the wipers?

It's not only a rain sensor it's also the light sensor for auto lights.

So you can have an auto lights only sensor, or a combined auto lights and wipers sensor (and there are 2 versions of that, one which allows auto window closing when it rains and one that doesn't) - confusing it most certainly is!

Do you have auto lights?

No, I don't have auto lights. But of course I would like to have them!

I am interested - what are the differences between the two versions of auto lights and wipers sensors? And since I don't have auto lights nor wipers - what sensor do I have and what it does?

I'm trying to remember what the basic #20 camera I had in my previous Octavia looked like and I'm 60% it looks like your picture. That gave HBA (High Beam Assist i.e. auto dipping headlights).

Woow! I am quite sure my car does not have camera! :)

I have read - the sensor with four visible dots (rain humididty light sensor) in corner is the one needed for rain sensing wipers and yes it should have the lights sensor too.

The one that is hold in the hand (not my picture, but mine looks like this) supposedly is the rain light sensor. People say it measures ambient light and rain, but my car by specifications does not have auto wipers nor lights. So what this sensor does? I only notice when running Daylight Running Lights, when it gets darker, dashboard dims to black only arrows stay lit. However, whhen I covered the sensor, nothing happened in dashboard..

Mine only has basic functions, If memory serves me right, the person who fitted my replacement windscreen told me it is a humidity sensor

The one in your hand only has 2 dots?

Dashboard dimming is done by a sensor in the dashboard itself, not by one on the windscreen.

I think you need to get someone do do a scan with VCDS, OBDeleven or similar to solve this question - that will show what is actually fitted to your car.

My feeling is that the scan will show a module 20...

I have VCDS myself. Where in scan log I can find the module type?

It would be odd that Skoda fit sensors for options that are not fitted. That said, the Superb is fitted with some rear light clusters with no bulbs in.

Yes, two dots it seems.

Tomorrow I will copy my log from other pc to see, what that shows...

So here is my VCDS scan. Can anyone tell- what kind of sensor I have installed and what exactly it does?

Scan.txt

On the infotainment screen under Car->Settings scroll down to Wipers are there 2 options, one for "Automatic Wiping in Rain" and one for "Automatic Rear Wipe" and if so are both boxes ticked ?

I have both these options in my 2015 Octavia and have Auto wipers. I'd imagine if you are missing the "Automatic Wiping in Rain" option then auto wiper are not installed on you car.

There is no "wipers" section in car settings in my car.

So - that's why I'm wondering if this can be enabled in VCDS?

Thr things stand out on that scan:

1) There is no 20 or A5 module, so you don't have any forward facing camera.

2) If you had auto wipers then under module 09 there would be a Rain/Light Recognition Sensor but there isn't - but there is a Humifity Sensor G355.

3) Your 5F module has corrupted memory and reports a very strange component name of MU-E--ER.

So the module you have fitted is an interior humidity sensor and not a rain/light sensor. This why you have no Wipers section in your Car settings.

Ok, I knew I don't have camera, but what does the Humidity Sensor? Is it connected to Climate Control?

Does anyone have succestions - how to get rid of the 5F module memory error? That came after bluetooth firmware update. However - everything works flawlessly, that's why I was ignoring it.

Mine has I believe just the humidity sensor and under wiper options I only have the auto rear wipe option. The OP should at least have this option.

I don't have rear wiper - so I cannot have that.

I see. Thought it was a standard fitting in all countries.
