Automatic V Manual Transmission - And does manual have assisted driving features same as auto

Featured Replies

Its probably a silly question but does the manual superb have all the same self driving features - and if not whats missing. Also any other reason to get the auto. I understand the general benefits. Is the manual preferable in any way eg more reliable etc.

Thank you

@Woohah  What are the self driving features your car has?

It will be a Superb SEL and has Adaptive Cruise control

My SE diesel manual has ACC.

Works well especially for steady driving ( as opposed to in traffic).
Obviously, if for example following a lorry up a long incline and speed reduces significantly, you may need to change down a gear, but when ACC is set, this gear change is done without touching the throttle- the computer adjusts the revs nicely on depressing and releasing the clutch.  Very smooth.   Same when “over the hill” and you need to change up again.

I dont do much town/ city driving in the Superb so any “benefits “ of DSG auto in stop/ start town driving arent useful to me.

personally, I went for a manual because of the need to sometimes manoeuvre slowly and accurately in reverse with a ( boat) trailer attached, and I feel a manual box and my clutch foot give much better control.   I also believe the manual box to be dependable and more reliable - even more so since joining this forum and seeing so many DSG auto tales of woe.

Ive never owned an auto but did fancy one for the superb, however only about half of those currently available are auto so including manuals increases my options.  I probably prefer no DSG "woes" too. So I'd be missing out on auto start stop? Am I missing anything else that recommends an auto superb?

Manual gearboxes Mk3 are fitted with Stop & Start. 😉

Manual will prevent you for TJA (trafic jam assist) and possibly DCC (at least it might not have all driving modes available on an Auto. e.g.: ECO mode)

The DSG version allows ACC to be set at motorway speeds, even in heavy slow traffic, where it will just follow as traffic jam assist.

The manual cannot crawl slowly in traffic, or return to road speed when hold up clears, because it is unable to get car to correct gear.

Bit of a dumb concept to choose a car with auto wipers, auto lights, auto climate control, ACC etc, and then specify it so have to intervene manually to change gear.

Yes except you have to change the gears for yourself & the auto will be more practical in several situations.

E.g.

In a line of slow moving traffic the auto will crawl & creep, stop, continue without intervention etc.

In a manual you will need to use the clutch & change gear as necessary.

One feature I love on my DSG is if you drive on A roads with ACC active, it will automatically slow the speed for a roundabout, drive at a suitable speed to navigate the roundabout & then accelerate afterwards.

Driving assistant functions will always be better/more integrated with DSG.

There are other considerations for the choice between manual and DSG Like upfront costs,  service costs, chance of failure & fuel economy etc

Equally I could say Bit of a dumb concept to buy a car with a known weakness such as many of the DSG gearboxes,  could I not?

I appreciate the responses.

I really want to prioritise reliability cos I hate dealing with the repairs process. But I do fancy the auto. Given how few Superbs there are for sale I'll probably go with whichever I can get my hands on.

Is there anything anything I should look out for when looking at a DSG apart from oil change if its above 40k?

That’s not available on early version.

My MY17 doesn’t have this feature for instance.

You could say that, but would have to gloss over the failure risks of dual mass flywheels, ad blue systems, dpf’s, and coolant pump failures on a tdi manual.

The fact is all modern cars are sh*te. You gave the best reason I’ve read on here for doing anything with a car, which is getting a manual gearbox model as it better suits your needs for manoeuvring a boat trailer.

The ACC on my auto does indeed slow for roundabouts and junctions. If you have the satnav programmed, it also slows for any right or left turns from the main road, and indeed when I reach my drive.

All good, except it is SO cautious that you can't really use it if there's anyone behind you. It's very very very slow. So I often have to use the throttle to actually travel at a sensible speed round a roundabout anyway.

Maybe later ones are better? Mines a 2020.

As to the auto question, personally I went auto about thirty years ago or more, never looked back. On the odd occasion I've driven a manual since I've hated it within twenty yards.
