CUNA engine rebuild approx cost and is it even worth it

Featured Replies

Hello all. So some time ago I already made some posts regarding excessive oil consumption and regen problems on my used 2016 vRS, 2.0tdi manual, since then I got the car checked quite some times and came to a conclusion that my engine is quite probably letting oil burn in cylinders, messing up the turbo and dpf filter in the process. Had the dpf taken off and cleaned and guys say the turbo is full of oil and needs repairing or replacement, my mechanic says he is convinced that the piston rings are the culprit and new turbo and cleaned dpf would just end with same fate if I dont change the rings. In short I might be looking at a complete engine rebuild smh...

So I wanted to ask if someone in here already done the CUNA engine rebuild on their vRS / GTD? How much approx. Could it cost even tho I know price could be anything? Was the results good? Is it basically new engine or you still had problems in the future? Or should I just sell the car and let someone else struggle?....

Thank you all! :')

Is it worth it may depend on overal condition of the car. How many other faults, how is the chassis, how much rust, have you made any major renewals ie. suspension etc. Or modifications.

If everything is original in a 2016, perhaps just let it go and get another one.

Depending on how well the engine has been maintained, you might want to get the existing engine checked.  If its just the case the piston rings are worn (IMHO - usually caused by poor running in when new), then it would be cheaper to get new pistons rings fitted.  However, there are caveats in all this.  If you have cylinder wall scoring, then other than getting the engine lapped and oversized pistons installed, it would be cheaper for a second hand engine.  Its also worth checking the crank and making sure all the journals are good too (if considering rebuilding the existing block).
