changing vehicles Insurance tax etc

Featured Replies

Got my recently aquired octavia and it comes to stopping driving one (my 08 Octavia 1.9 Tdi estate) and start driving my 09 1.8 tsi saloon  i was hoping to ring insurance tomorrow tell of change of vehicle get it on cover and then go online and tax it . Something is telling me i will have problems just read something re insurance that it can take 72 hours for policy to appear online on database so then i wouldnt be able to tax untill car does show on database .also they now ask are you owner and registered keeper ,i have log book but have not sent it off yet .I do just wonder wether i could press the insurers to get it on database and then i could go to post office and get taxover the counter and hand logbook in to them to return . Am i missing something

Yes

It is instant. I know your question does not involve MOTs but my son was able to advise my car passed it's MOT before I collected the car within half an hour of the test centre phoning me by using an app on his phone.

The V5C is not proof of onership anyway. It just names the person responsible for taxing the vehicle.

Insurance wise, the insurance companies deal with this all day long. They will take your money.

Lastly, I should wait for others to confirm (or refute) what i have said.

I access my insurance with an app . But you have to phone to change the car. When i changed my car in September my policy details changed whilst i was on the phone giving them the details,

I can change vehicles on my Churchill policy online and its instant. Theres two options 1 is temporary and 2 is permananent. If there is extra to pay I can also do it online and if there is a refund (rarely happens they transfer it back to my account. Some companies will charge you to do it by phone. This year my premium went up by £150, I phoned them to see if I could get a cheaper quote but was told no so I used Martin lewis comparison site and got a much better quote with the  excess reduced to only £100. It was still with Churchill so just paid for the policy and stopped the auto renew on the old one just in case. Went through ok. Still don't get why I got a much better deal from the same Insurance company?

if i change car re insurer online will i be able to tax online or do i have to go to a post office with green slip off registration ,if i have to go to post office i will have to drive there in an untaxed car.and how do in know i am insured by changing details online i dont have some person to say thats all done for you

If you do it online you will immediately receive into your account and/or by email the updated documents. You will have no problems taxing online in respect of insurance, and you can check MoT status at any time. On getting back from my test it was showing on the DVLA's site and third party sites like Vehicles more.

As long as the car is insured and MOT then you can tax it using the green slip online so insure first then tax, I assume you mean the small green slip that was given to you by the previous owner.

I was out at 6 as well. Damn cold and very slippy roads. Good idea getting rid of the locking/security nuts. I have had two times that they have snapped. First was by me but I had a spare so no problem managed to get rid of them but the second time it was the only one in the car. Tyre service got three wheels off then snap. It was a nightmare to remove plus our local Skoda dealer wasn't very helpful. Ended up getting a mate to weld a nut onto the wheel bolt to remove it. I now swap them for standard bolts on all my cars. Also When they snapped they looked more like alloy than steel.

Don't think anyone would bother stealing a bog standard alloy these days unless it was for the tyres.

I bought a set of 20 black bolts and 20 black plastic caps to go with them think it was about £45 i also purchased wind deflectors for the 4 windows  i need to fit them yet ,had them on my 2 previous octavias it stops water running of the roof and into the car drenching the electric window switches . Cig lighter socket works when it wants it works perfectly with one charger but tried others and cig lighters and cant seem to get them to work.

My Sons fabia lighter socket is the same. It works with one charger and also works his bluetooth/wifi adapter but the other two chargers don't work. Not sure why. May be either poor internal connection in socket or perhaps a voltage problem due to poor connection. He could do with another so was thinking of adding an aftermarket socket in the dash somewhere.

Was thinking of somethig like this and hard wiring it in.

i keep looking for a usb socket somewhere  i am used to having two working cig lighter sockets with my estates but now down to 1 choosy socket i will need to add something similar to what you show above, there is an AUX socket in the elbow rest but not sure how that would work its a single hole like a headphone socket unless i can get a cable that plugs in there a phono type plug with usb at the other end.

just done a little reading re aux socket in armrest it seems its an input rather than taking power from it i am useless with tech stuff ,is it something you would connect your phone to so your music comes through car sound system

My old octavia had a 3.5mm jack socket marked aux which was for adding MP3 player etc. My latest one has a USB style socket and on my sons 06 Fabis theres nothing. You change the radio setting to Aux and you can listen through the cars sound system. I assume this was before bluetooth/wifi etc. I also found a multi cd changer in boot in left hand side pocket which I didn't know I had.
