Coolant Temp Gauge Reading 50 - 55 Degrees

Featured Replies

Hi,

My parents recently bought a 2011 2.0 TDI PD Laurin + Klement 5d DSG. It’s immaculate with 1 owner from new, 90k miles on the clock and loads of service history. Recently however, I’ve noticed that the coolant temp gauge reports 50 - 55 degrees no matter how long they’ve been driving, type of roads or outside temp. Their usual garage confirmed there are no leaks and the coolant level is correct.

They’ve never had a Skoda before but everything I’ve ready, suggests the temp gauge should stick at 90 degrees. Is that correct? If yes, any idea what might be causing the low reading?

Thanks for your help!

Hello, welcome to the forum.

Has the temperature gauge done this since your parents bought the vehicle, or has this just started?

I'd suspect a faulty thermostat. Coolant temperature should read approx. 90 degrees on the gauge after 1 or 2 miles.

If your parents car has the maxidot display (small square screen between rev-counter and speedo) you can read the oil temperature on that - what does that read?

The Laurin + Klement all came with the maxidot as standard. So yes it will have a maxidot.

If it's a DSG there is an additional small inline thermostat which usually causes this.

It's a very easy DIY fix and can be bought for around £20.

Have a search on here for guides on how to do it.

Thanks for the welcome and this issue has started since my parents bought the car. I checked the maxi dot display and the oil temp isn’t shown. I also checked the “MFD DATA” options and oil temp isn’t listed even though its referenced in the manual...

Thanks for the suggestion and yes, it’s a DSG model. I had a search for those guides - is the location of the inline thermostat for the Octavia below the air box (the guides I found were for the Yeti and Superb)?

Assuming you have the MFSW with the L&K, have you scrolled through all the display options in the Maxidot?

I've scrolled through the options and the following are displayed:

Travel time (with small 1 top right)
Speed warning
Speed (with small 1 top right)
Route (with small 1 top right)
Range
Consumption (with small 1 top right)
Consumption

The following MFD DATA options are shown as available and all are ticked:

Travel time
Curr. cons.
Av. consumer.
Route
Av. speed
Speed warn.

I came across this thread which might explain why the oil temp isn't shown:

I don't know if this is related to the temp gauge issue, but today they put it into drive and instead of showing "D1", it alternated between showing "D" and a spanner symbol. It wouldn't move so they put it into park and shut the engine off. After restarting, it went into "D1" but for the rest of the journey, the engine warning light stayed on. This is the second time this has happened during the past fortnight.

I will check my display tomorrow - one of the notes in that 2011 posting rang a bell for me - the mention of a 'tick box' to display oil temp in the menu.

Ignore the reference to fixed servicing rendering the oil temperature unavailable, not correct.

Thanks for the suggestions and a replacement inline thermostat fixed the temp gauge issue 😀

When the thermostat was being fitted, the garage looked into the drive problem and said a throttle error was being reported. Because it was intermittent, they're going to try again when the warning light stays on more consistently.
