Clutch adjustment/bleeding - crunching in reverse

Featured Replies

I have a MK1 04 Skoda Fabia 1.2 which is not fully engaging in reverse when the clutch is at full depression.

Before I pay for a new clutch could this be anything else such as an airlock in the clutch or a faulty master/slave? also could bleeding the slave cylinder help?

The gearbox has an external slave cylinder see picture below.

Thanks in advance 👍

It's unlikely to make any difference but can't do any harm bleeding the clutch line. It does sound like your clutch is dragging, is the bite point very low?

It’s right at the bottom but always has been, I’m not experiencing any slipping clutch though

No, your clutch is dragging but it's still ****ed.

Looks like the worst news, however it only appears to be reverse gear so I’ll have to avoid going backwards till I’ve saved up £500 for a new clutch 😃👍

For a low biting point and dragging clutch absolutely!!!!

Your clutch should not be condemned as ****ed unless that has been done.

It crunches in reverse because you dont have synchromesh on reverse gear, if you wait a few seconds after pushing the clutch pedal down it may not crunch, if it still does then the dragging clutch will be wearing the synchromesh cones on all the forward gears so you should not wait too long to resolve the problem.

Start with bleeding the hydraulics.

I’ll definitely do that tomorrow 👍 J.R

I’ll post the outcome 😃

Just done the clutch on mine. It wasn't slipping at all then totaly failed. I replaced slave cylinder and bled system first to see if it would help. (Note when I took the slave out the inner gator was split and looked like it was about to start leaking). On gearbox removal the friction disc had disintegrated on the pressure plate side.  If the clutch isn't slipping you could always try to set the cables. Its pretty simple and solved my poor gear changes before clutch went. Theres a Utube vid that I used. It might help plus doesnt take long.
