That is the resistor for the blower motor, it should slot/clip back in, looks like it has melted the casing slightly which may give you a bit of a problem though

It gets hot so don't touch it if you have been using the car, its also a bit of a fire risk dangling about so get it sorted ASAP

Ok thanks, what if it doesnt slot back in, can i just remove it, drive normally and wait for the spare to arrive or not?

You will be able to drive normally but you might struggle to stay warm and have a clear windscreen without the fan working, at least I assume it won't work with that disconnected.

Ok thanks for the info

Hi

I suspect the lack of cover means that a passengers feet have caught the resistor unit and ripped it out of the housing.  If you are lucky it should just clip back in, it is latched by the white nylon connector housing. If it falls out again you might be able to carefully add a small self tapping screw and washer to hold it, but only attempt this if you are competent.

It's pretty amazing that in this age of electronics manufacturers are still using crude dropper resistors to control fan speed.  It's only by putting them in the air stream within the trunking that they can "lose" 20 or 30 watts of heat.  As the trunking is plastic, as mentioned above this is a fire risk unless everything is reliably in place.

Full speed may well still work.

Well, i dont know if its time to change the resistor, its a bit burned and i mean, it has 10 years, for 20 euros i better get a spare.

Here are some pics of the resistor and support

The support is melted a bit

( Update )

I tried clipping back the resistor and it actually clips but i dont really want to drive with a fire hazard

That burning was after it came loose and touched the mounting area I think. So not the resistor's fault.

If all the heater speeds work correctly it does not need replacing but it should be secured in its correct position in the airflow.

It is not a fire hazard if correctly located, the plastics are self extinguishing, there has been very little heat, the connector surround is untouched, a loose connector causes far more damage.
