Fuse 68, presumably the one you replaced, is fed by the load reduction relay in position 11 of the relay carrier.  A few other things get a feed from that relay, including the electric mirror adjustment and electric windows, do they also not work at the moment?

no they also do not work where are the relays located that does make sense

thanks for the reply

The relay panel is roughly in front of your right knee when you're sitting in driver's seat (on RHD car).

Lower dash trim on that side has to come out to access it, unfortunately.

I think the relay holder has numbered positions, but it's second from left on bottom row.

how would you test the relay or would you just put a new one in

Don't think you could test much without a multimeter.

If you let me know your reg number or VIN, I can look up the part number of the relay ahead of you getting eyeballs on it.

Think it'll have "18" written on the top of it in big font.

ov05lcl is the reg, at work at the minute so can’t double check the relay

i can get a multi meter from work today

Relay part number is 7M0 951 253A, that was superseded by 4H0 951 253.

Only other possibility is that the ignition switch and/or BCM are not giving the relay the coil current to switch it on.

It should be possible to measure in the socket that the relay fits in, what voltage is on the connection that relay pin 85 goes into, when ignition is switched to the point where all the dash cluster self test stuff starts happening. It should go up to 12V and energise that relay.

This is the relevant circuit:

was just putting the car back together, the car was running and i had the heaters on, the headlights cut out i then switched them off and on and after a second they cut out again. i turned off the car and went to turn it back on and it cranks once then nothing at all, ive checked the fuses i think it could have blow but im unsure on what to do now. whilst watching a video on how to take the panel off the guy skimmed over how when taking out the headlight switch you may shorten something and blow a fuse but that’s all he said and im thinkings it’s possibly that but i have no idea on what to do any help is appreciated

the battery is not dead

Maybe take the light switch out again and see if there's any sign of a wire getting trapped and damaged?

Not going to be easy at night.

i’ve had it all out and can’t find anything wrong with the wiring put the old relay in and still nothing

You didn't disconnect the battery at any point?

Loose terminal?

  • Author

i’ve checked that earth on the battery and it’s not loose i didn’t remove the battery

If you've got a battery charger I'd stick that on it just in case you have taken too much out of it.

you think?, it was running when the headlights cut out
