ESP Light turns on and stays on until the car is shut down

Featured Replies

Hello, this problem first appeared 1 year ago but i didnt think much of it, yesterday, it happened 5 times, the tires are 4-season litterally new, the road was dry, i tried looking on the forum but i haven't found anything like this.

The ESP system relies on signals from the wheel rotation sensors.  If a sensor goes faulty you may get a warning like this.  Time to have the error codes read, to narrow down the fault.

Almost certainly a bad ABS sensor, but you'll need VCDS or OBD II to find out which one.

If you can clear the codes and see what comes back, also in addition to an ABS sensor check the ABS reluctor rings for corrosion and or splits or maybe even missing teeth ... just my 2p's worth.

Hope it helps 🙂

Sure! will do it later, about the reluctor rings where are they located?

Cheers!

Hi, usually on the ends of the drive shafts after the bellows (maybe part of the wheel bearing if I remember correctly,) but you should still be able to see them not sure about the 2WD models, the rear ones may be on the inner face of the brake disk.

Ok thanks! i dont think i need to raise the car a bit because the wheels are actually big 😆 ( finally i got my hands on 4-seasons 215/60 r16! )

After looking at that lot, how old is the battery?

I note there are also a number of low voltage faults on that scan, strongly suggest a full battery test to check condition. A failing battery will often raise spurious DTCs

Strangely enough the battery is approxximately 4 months old

And the tests on the battery shows 14V ~

UPDATE:

I cleared the undervoltage codes, they were really old and they were from the past battery, the only codes that remained are the following ( after reading 195~ DTC )

The 14 volt test reading, if taken under correct conditions (engine off and surface charge dissipated) cannot be true unless your battery is being seriously overcharged. In fact, that reading should be impossible unless the alternator is running.

Hi

From memory, the Evaporative emissions setup involves a charcoal filter in a canister to trap petrol fumes from the tank.  This is cleared by drawing engine intake air through it as and when appropriate.  I don't think this is especially important for the running of the engine, and probably nothing to do with the ESP.

Yup, what about the ABS control unit error 01314?

If there errors being sent from one of the ABS wheel sensors, that will raise an ABS fault.

Do you have automatic idle stop (stop/start) and/or cruise control - does they operate correctly?

I doubt you will see anything, the handfull of VAG cars ive worked on over over the past 20 years have all had magnetic reluctor rings encorporated into the bearings and use a sensor located in the steering knuckle/bearing carrier assembley

nope, classical key fob and no cruise control 😀

  • 1 month later...

Just had mine done. It was both a faulty ABS sensor (Rear left) and a dodgy wheel bearing which apparently can swell and cause damage to the pick-up ring.
