Dashcam for New Kodiaq

Featured Replies

Thinking of getting a dash cam for my new kodiaq, so many idiots on the road these days.

Can anyone suggest a model they are using? Seems handy the rear view mirror has the USB-C port ready for it.

Skoda UK seems to offer Nextbase models mostly. Skoda NL doesn't. Would have been nice to have a bit more 'oem look' unit.

Just be aware that using a usb c as power source may be a problem. I couldn't get a Nextbase to work on usbc or on a bullet adaptor until I upgraded to a 3 amp connector.

that's literally what the adapter is for.... did you try other cables?

agree, the car has in built cameras, why not have the option to record at a cost?

I have a Nextbase camera. I tried usb c, I tried a 2 amp supply, I tried several cables. The camera would work for a while until the battery ran down. It appeared that the screen and the recording were using more power than the power supply could provide so it switched off when the battery was flat. When I used a 3A supply it was fine.

I also have a Viofo camera which works fine on usb c. This camera will not light the screen in normal use.

Wouldn't want a screen in my face all the time anyways.

The screen is not in my face. It is on the left of the rear view mirror at the top of the windscreen (RHD car) and it is out of my normal vision. It is no distraction to me, but I undestand it may be an issue for some.

Our experience with Nextbase is that the battery went after 18 months or so and it is (or was) not a user replaceable item. It had to go back to Nextbase for repair and that battery lasted just 6 months. I think other manufacturers offer a better alternative but as I say, beware!

The Viofo camera display stays on for a minute or so then turns off. The only thing showing on the camera are two dim leds, so no distraction.

BTW I have the A129 duo and it works fine with the usb.

will take a look at this, thanks.

Is there a USB-c for the rear camera?

The rear camera usb comes from the camera. If you but the Duo you get both cams and everything else you need.

IIRC you also get a couple of trim tools in the box too.

what do you mean "The rear camera usb comes from the camera" - you need to power it from the front camera?

The connection plugs into the front dashcam and routes to the eprear of the car. They supply a 6 metre cable to do this

argh...was hoping to avoid this. Were you able to route it without it being too noticeable? Do you have any pictures of it at all?

No pics I’m afraid, but it can be done reasonable easily. I ran it down the Rubber door seal down the A pillar then the same  around the edge of the carpet, up the side of the rear seats and under the boot cover trim, following the same procedure up the tailgate seal. The only bit I don’t particularly like is the loop from there to the tailgate. There has to be one to avoid constant use ruining the cable. Alternatively you could get it professionally installed. IIRC, on SWMBOs car it was only about £100.

thanks - will check it out for sure

The only thing I don’t like about the rear camera is the location to be in the wiper sweep. It has to sit a way from the top of the screen as the top trim is at a funny angle.

I’ve kind of got used to it though.

Edit: I’ve been thinking about this. I think it’s possible to mount it on the trim piece at the top of the boot, right in the centre of the screen.
