Cold start issues, and weird temp gauge...

Featured Replies

Hey all - ill get straight to it...

Starting from cold is difficult, very lumpy/jumpy, and will stall a number of times before it begins to run, runs a bit lumpy for 10 or so secs then seems ok for the rest of the day,

although does have a slightly erratic idle.

And - temp needle instantly goes from 0 straight up to 90c, even on a cold morning start, monitored with torqueapp and does indeed show around 90c

I was thinking temp sensors, but garage said no codes, and is thinking more fuel pump... does that sound logical?

Wouldnt have thought a bad pump would give a false engine temp though.

I need help, straight after xmas and funds are low, i just need to get it sorted and not be sent on a wild goose chase!

Thanks in advance.

Which just proves that 2 sensors (gauge and Torqueapp) are showing the same value. Which is why I'm thinking sensor.

Which garage said "fuel pump"?

A local independent said pump.

Would you say to change the two temp sensors?

What is the location of the two, is one by the radiator and one on the right side of engine behind that inlet pipe?

A scan of the car is needed as a first port of call.  VCDS/ODBEleven.  Any extended cranking times will throw a code and then we can help to narrow down the issue with you.  Fuel pump pressure issues etc should all show up.

Fixed it, DIY style!

No codes to show, but I had a hunch it was temp sensors, changed both and now it's back to how it should be, temp needle is correct, and cold starts are perfect.

You got lucky here, but its really worth investing in a ODBEleven system if you plan on keeping the car.

Not lucky, it was a considered diagnosis, the rough running from cold and the temperature gauge implausibility pointed to a temperature sender fault.

Thanks JR.

Yes, the garage scanned and no codes came up other that stop start.

I thought the likely culprit could have been a temp sender, rough when cold and incorrect temperature measurement being displayed.

Cheap and easy to fix, job done.

Don't always rely on obd, sometimes a hunch is more accurate!

I wouldn't agree more accurate, but in this case you were lucky and it was as accurate.
