Head unit like for like replacement

Featured Replies

Hello,

New skoda owner. The head unit screen does not turn on, however the buttons do light up. Tried the reset options mentioned online e.g. holding power button, disconnect battery etc. Fuses are okay. Just wandering if there's anything else that can be done. I wanted to try a like for like replacement, would this need coding to see if its the head unit thats the issue or something else. Pics of head unit and sat nav unit to help with type of head unit I have.

Have you connected the two necessary cables to the display?

Are they new or the same you used before? What display did you change from?

Part numbers would help, especially of the glovebox unit, the display looks like 3V0919605A.

Yeah, both cables connected securely when issue occured. I disconnected and reconnected cables to rule out connection issue. Checked all cables and connections in the unit in the glovebox. No obvious cable damage or loose connections.

Update:

Tried like for like screen replacement, head unit received power but display remained blank. I have attached image of glove box unit label, I believe model number is bottom left. I'm thinking its the cable associated with the blue connector at the back of the display as I think this may be power for the display. Alsa attached image of the connectors at the back of glove box unit. Does anyone know what each connector is for.

Sure, I recommend checking out the Electrical preparation section here.

Perfect, thanks for that. I've ordered a LVDS cable. Hopefully it'll work. I'll post an update once tried.

I'd give @pab567 a shout this is his bag.

Just to confirm,

- your original screen is dead.

- you tried a known working screen and it doesn't work.

For clarity, the screen is just that. It has some buttons but no smarts. All of the computing is done in the glovebox unit.

I think you are on the right track with eliminating things. It's rare that one of those cables would fail so that to me points to the head unit unfortunately. Pab will have some ideas I expect.

Not fully dead. The display unit gets power as the buttons light up, however the display remains blank. Same issue with both. I'm hoping it is the display cable. Definately would be an issue with main unit in glove box if the cable I bought isn't the issue.

So you have a different cable too? Did you buy the cable to fix the problem or did it appear when you fitted it? Why did you get a new cable?

I've purchased a LVDS cable as that's what powers the actual display partof the whole display unit according to the link that was sent in balazs955 link. Just waiting on that cable.

Unfortunately I rather expect glove box unit to be faulty... Pls ping me when you have new LVDS cable...

@AI1993 Hi. This problem is a unit. You can try to do a forced update and it might work.

@pab567 new cable arrived and fitted, unfortunately it didn't work.

@Joco776 how would I carry out a forced update?

So, they sold you a car with a faulty glovebox unit?

Yeah, but it was mentioned beforehand so I knew it was screen or glove box unit so got some money knocked off. But was hoping it was screen.

It looks like it's a glove box problem. WIthout dedicated tools (at least UART) you can't say what the root cause is.

@pab567 if I were to get a replacement would it need to be coded to my car?

If glove box unit is faulty then new unit can be prepared in Plug&Play version.

@AI1993 Hi. This can only be done by connecting to the motherboard and connecting via UART as pab567 mentioned.
