Heater doesnt work - bits are falling out

Featured Replies

Ive got a nice 1.4 tsi from 2014, has ran 335000 and still going strong - wonderfull car.

But I got a problem with the heater - when I start the car it works perfectly, but after a couples of minutes it gets kind of tired, and only blows now and then! Not good when its freezing putside..

I tried to access the blower, and when dismantling the covers this bit fell out - I can see that it has to go in a socket in the left side (european car)  but I cant figue out how! can anybody help?

And how do I get the blower out if that doesnt solve the problem with the heater - I cant find any obivious way to unscrew it?

Thanks in advance

Lars

Hi, I dont know where that bit is from, but sounds like you blower has worn out its brushes. So basically blower has to be replaced.

There is videos in youtube, it is a simple job.

You may reuse the actuator that is in the blower and order only blower without the actuator to safe few bucks.

Not certain which, but I think either one of the chipper vents (do any of them look strange and/or not work?) or the recirculation control (which seems to fit with your symptoms).

I took another picture - I can see that the fitting goes in here behind the white fitting. but I can't figure out how? And also how in came off?

Does it affect the blower in generel, or is only for some flaps?

Thanks in advance

wrong picture

This is the temperature flap control motor. The part that fell out is one of the pinions.

I managed to get the blower motor out and it looks all fine.

I tried to turn the blower on while having it out  - and it react strangely. It works fine if I turn it upsidedown. If I turn it in normal position, it blows less. And after a while it stops. Odd....

How can I check whether its the recirculation that creates problems?

Thanks

I assume you put back the white gear pinion that fell out, just for the sake of not having another set of issues beside the blower.

Re blower, sounds like it's on its way out. It behaves the same outside the car (if I understood you correctly) as it is when its in place and oriented the way it should be. And when opposite, it works as usual and does not get tired. This would indicate (to me at least) that there is something physically wrong with it. Maybe try and clean and lube the spindle? Also, check there is nothing that could physically obstruct the operation of the motor. Or give it to someone who has the bench and expertise for motors to take a look at it.

I did put the pinion (3 on your fine picture) back in place and the adjuster (1) - the pinion hardly move though when I press the control! If I understand it correctly this mechanism controlls distribution of air?

And regarding the blower - it looks fine and spins rathjer easily. And yes - it works best when turned upsidedown, and blows less in normal position! After a while it stops! Odd

That is correct, it controls the "mix" of cold and warm air in order to make the correct temperature. There is one on each side (driver/passanger).

No idea why would it work better when rotated 180 degrees. If the rotor moves up/down, then maybe when you turn it upside the brushes get better and more reliable contact and hence it rotates nicely? But this is just a guessing game at this point.

It turns out the the blower motor is gone - coals are worn out - so turning it upside down make the connections a little bit better, so the motor run in that position!

Got another from a car wrecker - works nicely

Thanks for the help!

Glad I could help. Enjoy the car and safe drive!
