Well I'm sorry to hear what you've said.

Dare I ask if it has put you off the make or model and if so  what you would get next time?

Obviously they all look nice in the showroom, perhaps you could tell more by looking at five year old examples to get a better idea.

I just hope the Bentley has a better paint finish than the Karok.

With a starting price of £1/4 million, I would hope so, too.

I had mine ceramic coated, which makes a difference to sealing the paint.

EDIT, "mine" being a Karoq not a Bentley 🙂

Also, despite being "water based" paint, most modern cars have a 10-year rust warrantee on the panels. Whereas in the past, they didn't with the other types of paint.

Many a Yeti suffered from the 'Zinc Inclusion' issue, as did some VW models.   An issue with the manufacturing on certain shifts in the factories.

VW Group / Skoda new when and where the issues in the factory happened and yet often Skoda UK made owners jump through hoops to get things sorted.

That was the cheap way repainting, and not the correct way as some got eventually, new panels.

Mine is late 2022. Poor paint had been mentioned elsewhere and dealers wouldn't be interested. I think it's the paint rather than the shape of the car. Ive never had a car affected by chips so badly.

Surprised as our 6 year old Karoq has no paint issues.

The paint on my Octavia is very prone to chips and doesn't seem particularly thick.

The paint on all the Fords I've had has been exemplary, so when I swapped to Skoda, the weedy paint came as quite a shock.

That said, I think metallic paint (all my Fords were metallic) is tougher than solid colour paint. Whether that's the clear-coat on top being different or what, I don't know.

Maybe Skoda metallic paint is tougher than the solid colours?

'Hardness' is the issue.

It is durability and resistance to chips & marks that matter,  Soft paint and hard paint are terms used.

It is about the paint (undercoat) under the colour coats and the lacquer / gloss coat.

Paint might chip but you are not through to metal and touching in is just the colour and not needing to rust inhibit.

When i was painter the Orange peel type finish of a New Ford or Mercedes really showed the amount of paint there was applied and when repairing or doing a respray you were replicating the factory finish.

Even now check out paint on some new Fords & Mercedes in a showroom and the not mirror finish paint even polished and as well lit as you are likely to find.

Even BMW,s in Solid or Metallics can look like the have 'thick' paint.    That does not guarantee being 'Chip proof'.

Look at the Dacia paint on some of the cars.  Prepped and paint / protection to last.

Like LR Defenders now, but with them you can pay for the option of the car being wrapped. The satin look vehicles.

Do you remember the base and clear metallics of the late 80's Fords and probably later on as well?

The clear coat was sprayed when the doors, bonnet and tailgate were fitted and closed so all the shuts were bare unlacquered basecoat which looked K-rap and they could not be cleaned properly as the rough paint finish held onto dirt and grime.

What colour is it? My Superb mkI was terrible for stone chips etc and was dark green metallic, a friends in silver was way better. My Superb mkII was waaaaay better re stone chips and was silver. I always felt the green metallic paint seemed "softer".

Didn't drive it but had a look round and an amicable chat with the slaesman.

I've made a quick post in the Yeti forum if anyone with a Karoq felt like adding anything to my musings.  But suffice to say I had a good feeling about it.

I nearly bought a Karoq 1.5tsi manual (test drove Karoq and Kamiq) aiming to downsize from my beloved Superb so Mrs BJ would like driving it. But she still found the Karoq "bulky" and neither had a long enough boot which causes a problem as we have started camping again now retired and our inflatable tent is big and heavy. I'm afraid we moved away from the Skoda brand and I'm now hooked to Toyota hybrid gubbins. I did like driving the Karoq though.

However I've discovered a long varied test drive is required on anything you consider and with recent cars with modern safety gubbins - implementations vary, some driving you nuts!!

I believe there is a difference between some of the colours  and  weather they are plain, metallic and special colours. Well with some makes anyway, this was a discussion (in a pub) about ford transits. Apparently they all start out white and then colours are added.  No idea how true that is.

Which Hybrid Toyota(s) in particular Big John?

Suzuki Swace (aka Toyota Corolla Touring Sport) - last of a model as Suzuki are going SUV or electric only, so I bought for a huge discount.

I test drove and wasn't expecting to like it to be honest - er whoops. I was amazed I fitted ok as I'm 6ft 4" tall, it's a low car but basically I was incredibly comfortable with seat on the lowest setting and my elbows were perfect re arm rests either side(I usually bash  against the B pillar of most cars - hence my previous need of a Superb).

However my favorite bit is the way the Toyota hybrid gubbins drives - it's not for everyone but it really suits my driving style.  Eco mode keeps engine revs low (when it runs!) but pulls surprisingly well when you need it. Setting off or pulling out of corners on country lanes quite addictive as it really winds up with petrol and electric combined. Economy is stunning but both the Swace and Corolla have very pessimistic fuel gauges - Theoretically it has a 43l tank but I rarely get much more than 30l in when it's showing circa 30 miles to go. Not so much of a problem though as you get about 450 miles on that (less in winter, more in summer). Another Selling point for us was the 596l boot that's about the same length as the one we had in the Superb.

That's encouraging. As mentioned before I wish they did the Corolla Cross here.

Yes indeed I think that would be a great car! I tried the CHR but I felt claustrophobic and didn't really fit - oh and the boot was teeny. Price might be an issue with a Corolla Cross even if they did it though, here in Yorkshire I struggled with the concept of breaking the £20k barrier(just!) - £30k would have been a step too far.

The recent Toyota hybrid gubbins has been a revelation to be honest, many years ago I tried an early Prius and it rather put me off. It was a friend who re-introduced me to the technology.
