vRS oil.... again!

Featured Replies

I know this question has been asked alot, but the answers have always been quite vague!

I do not intend to keep up the service history on my vRS as i dont think the money i will loose on the car when i do finally sell it will be as much as the money i have wasted paying muppets at skoda to top up my screen wash and change my oil.

I would like to know what oil i should be putting into the car, i know it is to be 0w30 but i know there are only a handful that meet the VW spec. The shell helix ultra i can only find on ebay. I want to be able to walk into halfrauds and buy 5 litres of oil thats going to be right for my car, so what should i be buying?

Any help is always much appreciated. :)

Look in your owners manual and it will give you a VW50?.?? code.

This is the spec oil you need. If insist of paying halfords prices I believe they sell castol edge 5w-30 which is a replacement for the old SLX Longlife II. It says on the bottle Replaces SLX Longlife II. Also I would use the champion oil filters (or better still genuine ones) over the halfords own as I know somebody who said the halfords one he had seemed to disintegrate.

Have a look at opieoils there should be a link somewhere on here IIRC.

However if you are DIY servicing you will either need a VAG-COM to reset the service indicator if on variable or be on fixed servicing. These require differenet oils on most skodas I know of.

I only used halfrauds as an example.. i am not mad enough to pay their prices!

I am on fixed servicing and i have VAG COM :)

I checked out the opie oils website but that place sells so many oils i didn't have a clue which one to get, they recommended me the fuschs, but the best part of £40 seems a wee bit expensive for 5 litres of oil.

Note to self; this thread makes me sound as tight as a ducks butt!

I'm affraid the Variable servicing oil is about £35 for 4 litres.

Thats a bugger, but basically you just need an oil that meets the correct VW50?.?? standard for your car.

For my TDI I know you can use Mobile 1 ESP, Castrol Edge 5w-30 and SLX Longlife II and also a Shell Helix VX oil. Find the number in the book and choosing your oil is done.

And yeah, but when I had older cars the service consisted of about £15 worth of bits including 4.5 liters of millers semi synth, an oil filter and an air filter.

Ring the guys at Opieoils and speak to them, they are top fellas, you will get proper genuine advice from them. They will tell you what you should use, but equally will be happy to sell you what you want.

I use Silkolene Pro-R or Pro-S in my Cosworth Sierra, including track use and it's fantastic - not thick and gooey when cold and maintains viscosity and pressure when hot - Best oil you can buy IMO

If you want proper advice and truth about "synthetic" oils, these are the guys to ask.

Well i attempted the service last night, i purchased the parts from skoda got home drained the oil and attempted to remove the oil filter.. didn't budge! Put a screw driver threw it, it snapped! Put a 8mm drill bit through it and wrenched it with a ring spanner, it snapped! drove a BIG screw driver through it.. not enough room to turn! Put a socket extension through it and it ripped right through the filter without undoing it! Hand tightend my ****!

How much are the VW oil filter removers that look like a big socket and where can i get one? Or if anyone near middlesbrough has one could they lend it to me for a couple of hours?

This is easily the worst car i have ever had to work on!

BaH, skoda dealership wouldn't lend me that part! But machine mart sell something that looks like it will do the job.. £6.99 all in, cant go wrong :P

Octavia oil changes are easy. The oil filter is in quite an accessible place, although I needed a chain oil filter remover to get mine off.

I'd prefer fixed interval servicing and changing the oil more regularly anyway. I wouldn't buy 'special' 'VW' oil. Yes, Costco is a good source.
