Fabia 1.4 100bhp cuts out at every stop

Featured Replies

Last week we got an EGR fault code and on investigation I found that the hard brake servo hose had split at the back allowing air in.

I replaced the hose, cleared the code and thought all wad fixed.

But it's got worse each run - jerking at light throttle when warmed up (not from cold) and at each stop it cuts out. No light on the dash.

I've checked around the pipes and can't see any more splits or anything amiss.

Before I book into the dealer is there anything else I can check. I did clean the throttle body (both sides) but no improvement.

Cheers for any input

It won't start at all now so it's the AA needed.

AA found no fault codes stored so they couldn't help either. But at least we got rescued.

Bit of a sad moment.

Did read on here somewhere similar problems with a 1.4. They also had split servo hose but the car still kept cutting out after replacement. I think they replaced engine ecu temperature sensor as the car seemed to be stuck in cold start mode as plugs were very sooty. The other suggestions were blocked breather hose and to check exhaust (pre lamda) for leaks. Tunned out to be the ECU engine temp sensor Took a few trips for the ECU to learn They had no stored fault codes either At least you are with the AA

Cheers for the reply. The car has just been in the garage where we rolled it after the AA tow. I charged the battery and tried this morning. Fired straight up...but heavy misfire. Guessing the plugs are well fouled.

Unless anyone has any other suggestions it's going to be in this order.

Fit new plugs and temperature sensor.

Then if no improvement check crank sensor wiring and if OK replace crank sensor.

The fact we have zero fault codes is perplexing. Usually the light comes on at the first inkling of a problem. Sometimes before it's noticed.

@Tailhappy Given the way you're thinking, I'd add coilpack(s) and HT leads (if applicable) to the suspect list.

I actually changed 1 coil pack recently due to bad misfire when hot so replacement of the others is on the list for sure. Thankfully a failed coil pack gives a nice easy fault code. No HT leads but I will be checking coil pack wiring. All of it is 20 years old now so suspect anything!

Ok update for anyone following. All plugs were completely fuel fouled. Black and no chance of running. Fitted 4 new NGK's and coolant sensor arriving tomorrow. Will fit and then try.

Whats your air filter like and has it been changed recently? Had problems a few years ago on an old Volo940. Random no start and it wasn't running right when it did but when I took plugs out they were really black. Checked airfilter and discovered mice had taken up residence in filter houising which wasn't good at all. Eventually had to take whole inlet system apart to clear all the crap that had been sucked in. Glad you fitted NGK and not Champion or some other cheaper make. Hope the coolant sensor cures the problem. Might be worth a bottle of injector cleaner as well. It should help get rid of the soot.

Cheers Alasdair. I'm a stickler for regular filter changes and I can confirm all clean. Yes only the best plugs - Bosch are good too but NGK is off the shelf at our motor factors.

And I'll definitely be running a bottle of cleaner. Poor car is not happy at all.

Update. Fitted the new coolant sensor and new plugs. Running very smoothly now. Took it a test drive and the engine is the smoothest it's been for a few years. Must have been failing. If the fault returns I'll post here...but hopefully that's it!

Glad to here it and hopefully you wont see the AA for years. Weird how a sensor can affect the car and not ping up fault codes. Suppose its similar to old cars with a stuck choke.

Yes here's hoping! The lack of codes was a surprise but if the car thinks it's cold then things like lambda signal are ignored as it will be running rich intentionally.
