1.6 tdi what to look out for.

Featured Replies

Looking at Fabia 2 1.6tdi 85k.

Apart from the usual dpf problems diesels have are there any standout problems I should look out for.

Regards

Body work is usually good on these models but check the rear hatch around the bottom they do rust, also check inside boot  in the spare wheel area  know water leaks from vents under bumper and rear light clusters check internal mats for  damp known water leaks from door internal seals, one problem thay seems to happenen on a lot of models is the drivers side rear door not locking or is locked and won't unlock electrics can also be an issue so check everything works as it should, engine wise it's coming near to a cam belt change which can be expensive as water pump and coolant needs replaceing along with belt and new adjusters at, if you can get at the egr pipe check the inside as a know carbon bulid up inside causes problems

watch for water/coolant loss or excessive whiteish smoke from exhaust  as some of these models suffer from air line cracks in the head doesn't effect performance but looses water over say 500 miles thid is an  quite an expensive fix other know problems are turbo issues usually from sticky turbo vanes or a faulty actuator on the turbo mostly shows up with a lck of boost in higher gears

Factor in a timing belt/water pump plus perhaps clutch and DMF (if it has one) depending on how it was driven/towing in the price if it hasn't been changed recently. I have an octavia 1.6tdi and so far no problems. Its sitting at 110k.

Meant to add check expansion tank for signs of kseal. If its been added to cure water loss you can see smal particles of coppe in the coolant. Shows up best by shining torch into tank.

Injectors, 1.6 TDI eats them for breakfast and they're expensive, these cars often end up on the market once injector faults start to appear because you have to change the whole lot for a new set.

Went to see the car this morning without an appointment.

I was given the keys and had a look round it.

Obviously had not been started. Which it did without issue. Couldn't fault anything, everything worked and immaculate inside and out.

I take on board the injector problem and no evidence of a timing belt change in the somewhat sketchy service record.

I didn't have a test drive at this stage.

Autotrader gives it a fair price mark. £3995.

Thanks for the info guys

If you havent already check MOT history https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history Its useful to check any fails that may have been hidden or tidied up for MOT. I use it for any advises regarding rust underneath etc

Yes just been doing that,  lots advisories for worn tyres, steering ball joints.

Car reg: MD64NJN..

Just did the same. Mentioned a oil leak from Gbox drive shaft at some point. Check its still not there and has been cleaned up before selling. I class ball joints etc fairly cheap and easy to repair which is just as well considering the number I seem to get through.

I was looking for a car for my son and the number of MOT history we checked  that had bald tyres with serious rust underneath. some were even down to the canvas which made me think the owner didn.t care much or look after the car.

Whoever had it previously definitly liked to get the most wear/value out of tyres. I tend to change mine before they hit the legal limit as 1.6mm isn't much grip at all

It's a one owner car, a guy from Yorkshire.

I assume he fixed the suspension wear. Not sure what upper pin/bush is Perhaps top mount? Lower one is an easier fix.

Apart from that looks like a nice car from the pic.

Did the owner let Skoda / VW do the Emissions fix on it?  Or did they maybe wisely say no!

New engine management and the Air Flow device in the Air Filter intake pipe.

I haven't any idea about the emissions fix. Why was it not the thing to do?

Think I read it was that certain cars after emissions fix lost some power and mpg dropped. I think it was an ECU software update. It was after the vw/skoda emisions scandal. You can check by entering VIN into link posted.

Obviously not all cars had issues, and the Peace of mind 2 year guarantee from VW Group saved some with cars that were ruined, and some just got shot of the cars.

Some had The Fix rolled back, and removed the flow device.

Think I came across this issue. Heard about few years ago when I had skodas.

My last was a 18 plate Octavia 2lt tdi se l face-lift,  fantastic car. Only problems the beam axle and cabin noise associated to it.

I've messaged last keeper for any bad issues with the car. Apologised for being cheeky but he can only tell me sod off.

Fair play. Its you thats considering buying it. £3995 is £3995. last thing you want is to buy it and end up spending a lot more on it. My sons was £1600 which was £700 more than the book value but as it was rust free and reasonable MOT history and 60k on the clock so reckon was worth it as he was learning to drive. Have had to do clutch plus slave, wheel bearing and a few ball joints, window regulator and motor plus new battery and have a couple of swing arms to replace at some time before next MOT but nothing too serious for an 06 plate fabia and so far not too expensive as I do it myself.

All not lost yet. I used to do most repairs myself. Depending on what needs doing to get my 2002 Octavia 1.9 tdi through the mot. A great mechanic locally who's very reasonable and clever could potentially save me spending £4k on the fabia. The Octavia is my run around 2nd vehicle which I treat like an old van. The cars done 192k on original exhaust and clutch.

Thats funny we have 58 plate which I was  trying to get through another MOT but ran out of time and effort as it was -10C Its rusty so working on its a nightmare. ended up buying a 12 plate 1.6tdi. Hoping to get the old one back on the road though. It was treated as a shed as well but never gave us any real bother plus went like a train. Did a lot for the last MOT but reckon it might need a new rear subframe and maybe (really hope not) a little sill welding . Not too bad a job as long as the old one comes off. Welding another problem.

192K on original clutch is impressive!! My record is 140k on an old volvo 940.
