Vehicle Warranties

Featured Replies

As I'm picking up my new (used) car on Saturday, I'm looking into warranty options.

The dealer offers 3 months, saying to bring it back to them.  They also offer extended warranties, but I've googled their warranty company and they don't get very good reviews.

Does anyone have any experience of, or recommendations for after-market warranties?

Thanks

Most aftermarket warranties will now only cover a major mechanical issue.  Skoda used car warranties are now out of scope after they reduced the years of age of the vehicle to 6 years.

Garages will go with the cheapest cover that can be provided and cover that will give them the biggest kickback in terms of commission.

Depends on what your budget is and what you want covered.  I'm seeing aftermarket warranty cover being anything from £600-£800 per 24 months / approx £300-400 per year.

They all require you to maintain fully comprehensive insurance cover as well as making sure that your electronic service record is maintained (or that you can prove you've had your regular servicing covered).

I think Skoda warranties like VW are for cars up to 10 years old and 100,000 miles.

The 6 year limit is for the All in warranty and service package.

I've had & claimed on few aftermarket warranties in the past, some successfully, some not. I currently have the skoda "all in", servicing and warranty plan, as it was a good price & hopefully it would cover my engine and dsg box within the event of sudden failure.

Within your situation, I'd prob take the 3 months warranty that's been offered & leave it at that. Try to save up a bit of cash, as time progresses, to cover extra repairs, as & when needed. Most aftermarket warranties I've had, usually cover everything, but what you want them to cover. If you have any issues within the first 30 days after purchase, take it straight back to the dealer & ask them to repair it under the 30 rule. let them sort it, rather than involving yourself with the warranty company yourself.

@daveo138 What are you getting, engine / gearbox and how many miles has it done and is there a detailed service history, showing what actually was being done?

2.0 TDI DSG with 55k, has printouts from Skoda dealer, DSG oil changed last year, but doesn’t appear to have had a cam belt.

Until about two years ago, VAG UK recommendation was 5 years or xx,000 miles, so a ten year old car could feasibly have had two cam belts.

The new recommendation is 140,000 miles with no time limit.
