Electric front windows failed

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a Mk2 Skoda Fabia, 57 plate (so late 2007). It's a very basic model with electric windows only in the front. I think it's a 1.2 engine, but that's probably not relevant.

The electric windows have given up working. The driver's door has a switch for the windows on both sides, and neither window opens from these switches. The passenger door has a switch only for the passenger side window, and this switch doesn't work either. So there is no action from any switch for any window.

They failed gradually; the fault was intermittent but is now permanent. The intermittency lasted for a day, perhaps two. They have now failed totally and don't want to come back to life.

Obvious first port of call was the fuse, but it's OK. At least the one mentioned on the sticker on the back of the fuse panel lid is OK. It's 25amps (from recollection) and seems fine. (I'm assuming that I am looking at the right one - I think it was number 51 or 52. I guess I could go along the row and check all of them in case the sticker is misdirecting me.)

Before I get too involved with wiring and looking for dodgy contacts, is there any known fault I should bear in mind? Has anyone else had this problem? If so then what was the solution?

Thanks.

ETA: Here's a photo of the car, after my wife reversed it into a skip.

Know issues wth the front windows are weak motors but the biggest issue with these are the runners in the door frame they dry out and cause the window to be very sticky and then fail to open or close the motor set up thinks it's a safety issue and stop working, WD 40 is not recommened but a silicon spray will help by spraying into the grooves back and front  but you do need to try and get the window open, you can if all fuses are ok then get someone to press the switch to open the window and yourself have the door open and clasp each side of the window and when they press the winow down try pushing the glass down at he same time, if nothing happens the next try are the switches and see if they are getting power, if not it might be the wiring loom connection on the front door to car plug there are posts on here how to remove this connection clean and refit, last resort you will have to remove the door panels and motor mechanism this also is known to corrode and sieze up also there are posts on here and you tube how to do ths job, I found this a great help when swapping a front door that was damaged and replaced all my gear into the replacement door

This must be wiring between the drivers door and the body of the car. There is a rubber gaitor that covers the wires. Peel the gaitor back and check the wiring.

Because of the dual switch in the drivers door power goes to that switch then out again to the passenger side switch. Intermittent then complete failure by reasoning it has got to be the wiring at the point where the wiring is flexed every time the door is opened and closed.

Driver's door motor module needs repairing. Classic symptoms described in your post.

My Fabia has this problem (again, last time it was broken wiring) the passengers window will operate from the passenger's switch but drivers side has failed completely, again.

I have had this several times, we have four fabias between the family. Most common cause is the door control module in the drvers side window motor. Not only does it control the window motor it also affects the central locking and door open sensors. Next most common is wire breakage in the door loom where it flexes at the hinge.

I got a cheap replacement module from Aliexpress which stopped the doors randomly locking but the electric windows still won't work so in desperation I have converted it to manual winders. The regulators from the rear doors fit and you need to drill a hole in the door liner, there is a circle on the inside to mark the spot. You also need to use the guide, window clamp and top cable from the front regulator that you are replacing. Bend up the tabs on the winder pulley to remove the pulley and the wires spring off all on their own. Note the front guide is a bit longer than the rear and the top cable is also longer at about 97cm.

I have removed the motor assembly but have had to leave the door control module connected to prevent random door locking.

Not elegant but it works for me.

Is this something you can fix. I'm.having the same issue. Checked fuses, door wiring had the car go into an electrical garage but nothing. Attached is the door motor unit I think needs changing

Hi, and yes, should be no problem to repair that.

I'll send you a private message with contact info.

Thanks for the thread bump.

FWIW, the windows on my wife's car started working again soon after they failed. This is probably the symptoms of a broken wire somewhere with the ends randomly being pushed together again but while it works, it works.

I'll think about it again if (OK, when .... ) it fails again.
