HDMI cables

Featured Replies

I've ordered a hypervision upscaling HDMI Samsung DVD player which does not include a cable.

Our LG TV has an HDMI connector on the back and I assume the DVD player will have a similar one.

My Dell PC at work has a digital graphics card and a monitor with an HDMI connector on it.

I have the DELL supplied cable sat in my drawer as I'm using the standard monitor cable.

Will the DELL lead have the same connector at the PC end that I will nee don the DVD player?

it might be hdmi at one end and dvi at the other  have a look on the dell website to see what outputs the pc has?

The Dell cable looks to be the same at both ends (much like a scart lead is the same at each end)

Will the DVD player be DVI ?

Highly unlikely DVD player will be DVI or HDMI unless it's a HD-DVD player :) (or brand spankin new & pretty awesome  )

MPM :D

I don't know of any HDMI graphics cards (although someone may be able to prove me wrong) and I suspect it is a DVI socket instead.

For your DVD to television, you will most likely require a dedicated HDMI cable which can be picked up quite easily.

the dvd player is hdmi. what does the cable look like?

dvi is the larger plug on the right, hdmi on the left

The cable has the larger connector on both ends. I seem to remember the TV has the larger one too.

Looks like it wont' fit the DVD player then.

Connector pictured above (the larger one) is DVI-D, the main difference between HDMI and DVI is DVI only carries picture, no sound. I have my Hyundai LCD TV hooked up with a DVI-I cable (has extra pins on) to the DVI-I socket on the TV and then sound from the Optical out going to the AV Amp.

I am using a little small form factor PC for everything though with an ATI X1900XTX graphics card in it. Not got much HD stuff, mainly trailers etc but it looks good all the same.

in summary :-) you can go DVI to DVI but you will need to offload the sound to your AV Amp or your tv's din inputs.

someone more knowledgable will be along shortly though as we have some closet audiophiles / tvophiles :-)

As a Hijack, anyone know if sky HD has DVI or just HDMI?

I always run DVD's through a digital link to my AV AMP so a lack of sound is no big problem.

Bought a copy of What Hi-Fi at lunch time and it seems there is a huge variation in cost of these cables. Luckily there is a decent one for less than £30.

well...yeah...he's not going to an analog display, so why show a DVI-A cable

although it's technically DVI-D Single-Link :P

doubt it's an HD-DVD player though, that isn't the same thing as a DVD player that upscales to "HD" resolutions

:)

My bad, too busy munchin on me lunch to read the first post twice (and hence properly :P )

MPM :)

OK, Mr. technicality - it is an upscaling DVD player.... but I said that in the first post diddnt I ?!

So ... describe how you can identify it as single link from the picture above :)

I was just commenting on the fact that there are many kinds of DVI Cable, which most people are probably unaware of.

DVI-A,DVI-D,DVI-I Dual link, Single link etc

Fluffmeister,

Sky Hd has HDMI output, and on the early boxes also has component out, although i do believe this will be removed on the later version of the boxes.

Also it becomes interesting when you have two HDMI outputting devices and only one HDMI input. That involves a switching unit and big bucks for a good one. :(

i have a samsung HD DVD player with hdmi output and it only cost £100 :) and it came with the cable :D

before that i had a samsung HD DVD player with a DVI output :)

i wouldn't go an buy a proper HD-DVD player yet or for the next 12 months at least as the platform isn't set yet, there are 2 contenders(blue-ray and HD-DVD) and which will win no body knows.

The player will most likely have a HDMI cable included.

NVIDIA make a HDMI graphics card, and its available now although only to OEMs. The Sony VAIO XL100 HTPC has both HDMI and component out, no DVI or VGA but does have a HDMI-DVI cable with it.

Looking at most new HD Ready TVs, there now seem to be more available with 2 HDMI connections.

my tv has dvi, vga, scart and phono wotsit as its about 3 years old but i have a dvi-hdmi adapter that works fine and my xbox has a vga cable :)

Which player have you got Bengie ? I'm going for the Samsung HD-860 (5 stars on what hi-fi) and is now available at www.play.com for less than £100.

damn double-post

Interesting, the Samsung website says the 860 doesnt have a cable included. Will have to wait and see what arrives.

Is the 850 good? I assume they ar eessentially the same unit.
