Driver Window Problem

Featured Replies

A few weeks ago, I went to use my driver electric window and when I pressed the button the electrics kicked in as normal, however, as I expected the window to go down I heard a noise, and it never moved. I tried again and the motor seemed to be working but the window would not go down. When I got out the car the window could move slightly up ans down when I put pressure on it using g my hands. I then pressed the window fully up and it seemed to secure it in place and it would no longer move.

The motor still seems to work so I'm thinking it is no longer attached to the lever it should be. Has this happened to anyone else? I have it booked into my local independent garage tomorrow for them to have a look as they are very busy but I'm unsure if this is probably one for the main dealer.

All help is much appreciated.

Probably the window regulator mechanism. My sons mk1 failed as one of the cables snapped andd wrapped themselves round the motor etc. There are plastic wheels that can break as well. Went down and a little bit and then seized. I bought a replacement kit on ebay for it. On the MK1 the steel doorplate is pop riveted on and has to be drilled out to get to the mechanism. You need special rivets to replace and a big rivet gun. Fairly easy to do once its apart. Not sure about inside the MK3 door. Hopefully they have gone back to using bolts rather than rivets.

Thanks for the reply Alisdair. I'm really hoping it cN be sorted by my local independent garage tomorrow however, I'm not sure it is something that can be sorted in a day. I've got a feeling that when it happened initially,I heard the sound of glass crack (or scrape), so I think I might need a new window also. I won't know until they take the door off I suppose.

The glass slots into a couple of slot/clamps at base and is held in on mine with two bolts. It may have slipped out of them or the cable mechanism has failed. Happened to me when window was frozen and glass stayed put but mechanism went down. The garage should be able to tell once the door card is off. There are holes in the door to access the clamps behind the door card. If its the cables etc then the door would have to be dismantled. They wont need to remove door either way.

You could try helping it yourself with a little time and effort and shake spray use of GT85 to clean and lubricate the window runner channels. You are best to have the engine running to get the electric windows up and down and for cleaning and lubricating if the battery is in a lower state of charge. There's a few videos on YT or I can find a good well explained and demonstrated one for you.

Of I has to hazard a guess, I'd say the window stayed where it was for some reason and the mechanism went down and is probably now not clamped onto the window. Here's hoping it isn't too much of a drama when I put it into the garage.

When my sons failed first it would go down a bit by itself when driving. I stopped at lights and tried to lift window and push up button and it shot downwards. I had to drive home with window down in -5C with slush etc hitting me in the side of the head. Managed to get it back up eventually then grinding noise and it seized completely. As said not too bad a job once the door card and panel is removed. Hopefully its a fairl simple fix as your car is a fair bit newer than my sons. I think the repair kit was around £25-00 plus I had to buy the special skoda rivets. From memory they are 6.4mm x 10mm for the MK1 and a bigger rivet gun so not the end of the world when it comes to car parts.

It might be b*ggered but I'd try lowering to bottom then see if you can push window back into the clamp, obviously take car you don't want anything broken, then I would clean/lubricate inside rubber guide channels both sides on door window as it's such an easy thing to do to further help to reduce resistance of glass to channel and make the motor and mech's work easier for them, and see how that goes.

If that doesn't work then further investigation is required and perhaps farting about with door panel removal, trim removal I tried to avoid plastic clips are a PITA.

I don't think there is a repair "kit" for the Mk3 but I might be wrong and I'm fairly sure it doesn't have the troublesome rivets like the Mk1 (my mate usually replaces rivets with (hand rivnut tool) rivnuts/ rivet nuts to make future work easier and quicker).

Both windows failed on my 2018,one under warranty the other I paid for, cost about £250 to fix.

It's not good that any Fabia Mk3 has problems with electric windows even a 2014/5 shouldn't be old enough for such let alone 2018 on. ☹️

It turns out the cable snapped on the window regulator. Managed to get it replaced for just under £200. I think the part was about £50 and the rest labour and vat. I was advised to use the windows more often due to the low milage on the car-16000 for 4 year old in July.

Thanks for reporting back.

Unfortunately for German "quality" engineering that's good advice, you shouldn't need to and wouldn't probably on others, 4,000 miles per year average is low but not that low, it's lower quality parts, build and design.

The rear windows on my wife's 2015 Mk3 are hand crank winder handle (I much prefer this system but one of these gave a bit of a twang not long after she first got the car (18 mo0nths old 10k-miles) so from then on whenever I open the rear doors I fully wind the windows down and buck up again as the rear seats are rarely used and rear window lowered only if I ever sit in the back which is very rare indeed.

4 years old is some added stuff on "service" and "maintenance" schedules, if you bought the car brand new a bit less mileage and it might have been cheaper getting taxis.
