Strong exhaust smell!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

So i'm on my 2nd scout now PFL 10 plate with a BMM 2.0tdi, i have had this one a few months now and have gradually noticed the exhaust smell both in the car and out. While stationary its getting strong within a minute or so. externally stood at the back of the car in the boot or whatever its strong enough to make you cough!

I have just given it a full service including replacement cabin filter, cars runs great. Had a look on the ramp for any black soot on heat shields etc, all looks ok, im assuming maybe a joint on the dpf or egr?

Any pointers or previous experience appreciated, thanks.

I did check this, gave it a good pull/push etc seemed ok? i would of thought it would be covered in soot if it was failing.?

Its not trying to regen the dpf. That can cause strong exhaust smell. Another point perhaps would be the Cat thats failing.

I identified it on mine by the smell alone.

fair enough, ill have to get it back on the ramp when i have a bit more time.

Did you use one of the universal ones?

I have the BMN and have always thought the smell was horrible even from nearly new and certainly gives me an indication of exhaust problems by it getting worse.
