Tailgate switch closing problems

Featured Replies

Sometimes I have noticed when the tailgate is open and trying to close it with the switch on the lower part of the tailgate it will start to close but then beep and stop closing. Nothing is in the way and pressing again it will open fully again. Then pressing it one more time it will close fully.

The interior open/close switch on the drivers door works ok as does the kick sensor at the back. Anybody else seeing problems like that?

Might need to get Skoda to look at it whilst under warranty.

I also had this very same problem. Sometimes the switch would work fine; sometimes it would take several attempts, beep, then stop.

This same behaviour also happened with the internal switch and 'foot swiping' under the bumper.

I took it to the dealers, they checked it and said it needed the tailgate switch replacing.

This was fitted last week and all seemed to be OK.

The fault is now back but possibly not quite as bad?

I'm not sure I can be bothered with the dealers again and may wait for the 1st service?

Same here. Works so random.

Will ping dealership about that problem.

The behavior is as described above.

Beeping and started to close, and suddenly stopped. Had to press ignition and works after.

I did contact the dealers and it's due in (again) on Friday 25th April.

It has actually got worse now. It's reluctant to close by any of the closing methods, hatch switch, in car switch, or foot waving.

Makes you feel a bit of a tit stood there waving your foot while the hatch starts to move, pings , then stop abruptly.

Also now when it does power itself closed it does not always close with enough force to activate the closing latch.

You have to start it opening with the hatch switch above th number plate, manualy stop it about a foot or so open, then manually slam it shut to close properly - not good!

With all the above now I can't help thinking it's something to do with the struts - not all the switches.

Hoping they can fix it on Friday, but not holding my breath.

In my case, from the car key I can close it for now. But it's awkward.

When I open the tailgate and just can't close it in any way.

Will drop an update what local dealership will say about it.

Mines in the dealers now. Being 'fixed'!

Today I also visited the dealer. They said, try to calibrate the tailgate. When it's fully open, press and hold the button till you heard a sound.

In my case, did not close when am close to the rear bumper. But, that not happening often. Still, I can't find the pattern to simulate it in a similar conditions.

Interesting. I seem to recall from my previous Superb S3 you could set the height of the tailgate so as not to hit low ceilings in carparks or garages. Maybe that is what they are referring to. I haven't seen any instructions in the manual for the S4 to do that but there is probably a setting you can do when standing at the tailgate.

I got mine back from the dealers yesterday and it now seems to work perfectly!

They fitted new boot lock/latch to cure the 'not locking shut correctly' and diagnosed a faulty 12V battery as being the cause of pretty well all of the other problems. I was a little sceptical.

But, as stated everything now seems to work fine. The hatch opens and closes with any combination of the various methode available, so, well done Skoda.

I may be imagining it but the battery does not have any cover fitted (can't see anyway how it would be fitted) but a niggling memory seems to remember one.

Also I need to find out if the new one is an EFB, AGM, or whatever so I can set my charger up correctly if I need it.

As an asside the noise the hatch makes opening/closes sounds different, smoother perhaps, with the new battery.

I do still miss the additional warning brake light flashes and beeps I had in my old Mk3 L&K Superb when opening/closing the hatch.

I had the same issue, but if you give button on the tailgate a firm push it always closes.

Mine didn't
