Superb 3 2.0tdi Crank no Start. Fuel Pump Not Running

My 2016 2.0tdi cranks but doesn't start. The fuel pump doesn't run, I've changed the module but no change, there is no fuel getting to the front of the car.

Up front I will admit to being a complete VCDS novice, I can read and delete codes but that's about it.

I've run a scan and the log is copied here below. There's a lot of ancillary things unplugged, because the front bumper and all the lights have been removed, there's also no coolant in the engine. The cooling fans have been unplugged because as soon as they are plugged in they run at maximum speed. I don't know if this explains the p0480 code or the fact that it thinks the Coolant temp. sensor 1 bank 1 at cylinder head: raw value: 2222.0 °C and Heat delivery temperature in cooling system: -273.1 °C

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated, there's probably one thing that's stopping the fuel pump from running but I can't see what it might be?

You seem to have a couple (that I noticed) wild ambient air temperature readings too. 63c and 77c, lots of wild readings reported - do any of those prevent the engine from being run (perhaps by stopping fuel) (I've no idea)??

Have you tried switching the pump on to see if it actually runs, then there's checking the usual, power, return and computer getting to pump.

Have you got any wires or connected crossed or exposed/damaged.

There's obviously a lot more to the story of your post and scan report but it'd be beyond me anyway. I think you need to do checks, cross-checks and procedures in stages and make sure one or more things aren't interfering or causing issue(s) with one or more other things.

Quite possible, I've seen at least one other reference to hard to start TDI being resolved by replacing a faulty temperature sensor.

I have tried to get the pump to run through VCDS as there’s a test you can run but it has no effect. There are 6 connections to the module but I don’t know how to check them or how to check the pump itself. I’ve also replaced the module.

I’m going to have another look tomorrow. My current theory is that the loom is damaged somewhere because there are too many open and short circuits to be a coincidence.

I’ll report back tomorrow.

OK I had a couple of hours to play today. I've done another scan which I've posted below, this is an engine only scan, some of the faults like glow plugs have gone away.

I've removed the fuel pump from the tank (yes there is fuel in the tank) and would like to test it, there are 4 wires to the pump (and another 2 to the fuel gauge sender) but I don't know how to test it, The colours are Red, Brown (+12v and earth) Yellow and White, it's the last 2 that I don't know what they do, any ideas?

So the ones I have left which I feel may be relevant to the non-start because the fuel pump isn't running are:

P0480 Cooling Fan Control Circuit.

Not sure about this one because the fans are unplugged (because they run as soon as they are plugged in)

P025A Fuel Pump Control Module.

I've replaced the module but nothing changed

P0070 Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Malfunction

I assume this is the same one that feeds the external temperature in the dash, which is showing the correct value?

P0090 Valve For Fuel Metering. Open Circuit.

Is this a fault or is it because there's no fuel in the fuel rail?

P2294 Fuel Pressure Regulator Valve. Open Circuit.

Again, is this a fault or is it because there's no fuel in the fuel rail?

I don't think any of the other faults would stop the engine from running. Anyway, here's the latest scan.

Unless they are typos, I am still seeing three reported temperatures between 2 and 3 thousand degrees C, and one (heat delivery temperature in cooling system) of minus 273.1 C!

If sensors are in fact sending impossible readings such as these to the ECU, they should be looked at.

The 12v battery seems to be getting lower, I'd suggest fully recharging the battery to help with future (and perhaps current) diagnosis, a battery that's too low can hinder diagnosis and the diagnosis can further lower the battery so you want to at least start at a reasonable level of charge.

You need a wiring diagram to know which wires go where. I don't know if the pump has some sort of restrictor from working off a live supply and return from the battery for testing as diesels are more of a mystery to me than even petrol engines and I know next to nothing about them. I'm also not sure how much can be disconnected from the various computer systems and still allow the engine to run (or go to limp). Those wild readings I can't see helping.

When you changed the module did you 'code' it in, it it recognised by the system and show as such.

Unless they are typos, with recorded temperatures above the melting point of steel - or at absolute zero being reported to ECU, it can be no real surprise that the engine will not run.

The battery was fully charged when I went through the process, the slightly lower battery voltage is at the end of the session, same error codes with fully charged battery.

There is no coding for the fuel pump module, its plug and play.

The temperature readings are what VCDS is telling me, clearly they are wrong but I don’t know why they are so far off normal, maybe it’s because the fans are unplugged, because they run all the time which itself may be why the fans run all the time. I don’t know where the readings are coming from?

The readings will be originating from the sensors and being seen(and responded to) by the ECU.

At the very least it would be reasonable to assume that the issue of the cooling fan constantly running is caused by these completely impossible readings.

Have you checked the VCDS on another car to confirm it is running fully correctly - I'd be surprised if it wasn't but it's another check and conformation.

Doi you know if those wild readings are some kind of default to confirm operation in some way, figures like that suggest to me that there some kind of backlash with communications or wiring or connectors somewhere.

For the pump can you wire direct to a 12v battery supply and return, or a return to see if the pump comes to life?

So many bits - has this car been in an accident / fire / flood or electric or electronic major issues or part replacement?

The car has had an engine change, no accident/flood etc.

I’ve checked the VCDS on another vehicle, had it a few years now.

I’ve charged the vehicle battery and get the same results.

I have no problem idea why the temperature readings are so far off, I’m wondering if there is some sort of wiring fault/damage. The ambient air temperature is showing fine on the dash but VCDS says it’s 2000 C in one place and -373 somewhere else. Probably a default due to open or short circuit?

The fuel pump has 4 wires as I’ve detailed earlier assuming 2 of them are +/- I don’t know what the other 2 do and whether the trigger is 12v, something less that 12v or earth? So I’m stuck with that one. I have the wiring diagram for the pump and module but it doesn’t say what these 2 wires do.

P025a refers to the fuel pump module which I’ve replaced, I suspect that for some reason the module isn’t been triggered but I’m not sure why?

I’ve read about the cooling fan relays causing a problem but not a complete failure for the engine to run.

At the moment I’ve hit a brick wall.

I think it's likely that if the ECU is seeing those impossible temperature readings, critical engine ancillaries will not be commanded on.

OK, I've been a bit short of time recently but some progress (or not).

There's nothing wrong with the fuel pump or module, I tested them in another vehicle and they work fine.

Haven't had a chance to fit the front panel/ambient sensor yet, hopefully over the weekend.

An update.

I've been quite busy with other things but now I have the car running.

The car had an engine change, I've done 2 Passats/Superbs previously, so nothing new, the other ones fired up straight away.

Pretty much all but 3 of the error codes were spurious for one reason or another. I went from 24 to 23, then 14 to 13 and eventually down to three all related to fuel supply. Once I'd fitted the front bumper (which contains the ambient air sensor) I got no error codes, fuel was getting to the injectors but it still didn't fire. Lastly I coded the injectors and she fired up. All very strange as the last 2 fired up without the bumper/front panel fitted and without coding the injectors.

Well done on finding it and sorting it. Thanks for reporting back.

These computer, electronic and electric systems are fragile and with the computer side particularly if one's upset or has an issues that can track to unexpected others. This is often difficult to explain to others and for them to accept it but it's seen often by those that do repairs.

I watched a video today from a car technician where he said he was surprised that other technician and garages don't have battery jump leads and how he uses them for diagnosis, if he suspects a possible bad or poor earth he would connect one or two battery jumper leads from the battery negative terminal clamp to chassis and/or engine even before getting the scan tool out and if electrics improved and no error codes he knew which side of electrics to start on - so many concentrate on the power supplies they forget the other side. Anyone who's had to do any electrics on old cars or fibreglass bodied cars knows the importance of earths and it's a basic that's no different with the latest cars, in fact more so given all the electrics and electronic and how flimsy the wiring is.

He said a mate had an issue with earthing just because one spot weld had gone on a modern car and an additional earth supply was need from that spot weld back.

I forget the details about the injectors but if they needed coding then you can't argue with the computers as they control everything.
