Struggling to pull away.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

Can anyone share their thoughts on an issue I feel like I'm having with my car.

For quite a while now I have felt that my car is struggling to pull away from a standstill. The feeling I get is that as I bring the clutch pedal up all the revs just drop away and it feels like it would stall, I have to then push the clutch back down build the revs and then go again. Once it's rolling I can pull the clutch up and it feels ok.

I've had a full service done in February including the fuel filter. And in April I had a new clutch and flywheel fitted yet I'm still getting the same feeling.

I can pull away on the clutch alone and the car will go and not stall.

It's even worse on hills.

I'm not sure where to go now. As I say, I have had the issue a long time. Last August I took it to Skoda and they did diagnostics and found nothing wrong.

So I don't just want to take it to another garage because I just don't think they'll find anything.

What else could cause this sensation? Could it be throttle related, timing related? I did have the timings belt changed about 3 years ago, at the time I thought it felt a bit slower. But it starts and stops fine. No rough running so I just thought I was imagining it. The timing belt was changed at Skoda. Is it at all possible they've set the timings wrong?

The car is a 2016 2.0 TDI 190. It has 150000 miles on the clock.

Thanks.

Adrian.

Could it be dpf related? Any thoughts on wether a rolling road place may be able to help by showing me the power output?

Could do - although if the car doesn’t feel down on power when you’re on the move then the rolling road won’t give you much info I don’t think.

Have you tried any type of scan to see if there are any fault codes logged?

The last time I put an obd scanner on it there was no codes. That was February.

Hi,

Since it's a manual gearbox, when was the last time you had your brake fluid changed?

Indeed, the clucth slave cylinder is powered with brake fluid. It could then be an hypothesis... among others.

I am not certain on that. I had the brakes all changed back in February when the service was done, and as I say, the clutch was done last month. But apart from that it's been some years since I had a full brake fluid change.

Skoda recommends changing brake fluid after 3 years and then every 2 years.

Might it be the cause of your problem or not, it's time to have it changed anyway. Then you'll see if your problem has disappeared or is still there at some point.

🤷‍♂️

@Itsrelfy do you use auto hold? If so, try disabling it and go for a test drive.

Are you sure you are engaging 1st gear, it sounds like you are setting off in 3rd gear? Possible gear linkage mis alignment when the clutch was changed. Just a thought, I did a similar thing changing a clutch many moons ago. Could also be an engine / gearbox mount issue causing the same.

Yes. I'll get that booked in and I'll get them to check all the mounts while they have got it.

I do use it yes. I've tried without but it does not seem to make much of a difference wether it's on or not.
