Hello, I have a skoda octavia 1u2 from 2004 which got into our posession a few years ago. I never really liked the clutch as it bites pretty much at the end of the pedal lift with a very small window (i often make it either rev up too much or i get it almost stalled).

It has 240 000 km driven and i think that the clutch has never been replaced. Gears get shifted easily without gnashing or whatsoever so i guess the clutch isnt worn out fully yet.

But then i started reading about clutches and realized it is hydraulic and that some posters here mentioned that they have remapped the clutch.

What does this remapping means?

I also feel that the pedal is very soft, but so is the brake pedal, still it breaks properly but have to push the pedal deep. Is that an indication of air in pipes? The brake fluid has been replaced a few years back by previous owner.

Any insights?

1., 2. It probably means that either the owner has an "automated manual transmission" such as a DSG, or that they are talking complete male bovine faeces because there are no electronics in a manual gearbox and/or hydraulic clutch to be remapped.

  1. it could mean that the brakes need bleeding. It could also mean that the clutch, which uses the same fluid reservoir, needs bleeding.

At 240k I would say the clutch if hasnt been changed will be pretty worn including pressure plate and release bearing. I would try bleeding clutch first and see if it makes a difference. My folks old fabia was like that but improved when new clutch was fitted.

The brakes may need bled or perhaps a fluid change and see if it helps. If not it could be the brake master cylinder thats failing and letting fluid past the seals. Also check that the fluid in the reservoir isn't dropping as well in case you have a small leak somewhere either in clutch or brake system.
