Information about my disc brakes

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I understand that there are many discussions about disc brakes, but I am seeking this information for my own knowledge.

I have an Octavia MK3 Elegance 2014 registration, and I do not know what sizes my disc brakes are. Where do I find the information about them?

Thank you.

depedns also is it 1.0, 1.4 tsi od 2.0 tdi 170ps.. maybe 2.0 tsi 4x4 or else.. more data needs. also do you need front, rear or all 4 discs.

Just taken a front wheel off to measure mine at 312mm. It's a 2016 vRS diesel Hatchback.

There seems to a consensus on here that the diesel vRS has smaller front brakes than the petrol vRS; why is that?

Early vRS diesels had the bigger brakes. Up to around 15 plates, from what I remember. As to why? Cost saving and the TDI just not needing them, is my guess.

We need more info on the engine.

Because the TDI vRS isn't as powerful as the TSI, so the larger brakes aren't really needed. PFL Mk3 cars had 340mm fronts and 272mm rears, regardless of engine. The FL 245 had 340/310, the 230 had 340/272 and then the TDI had 312/272.

The vented 340/310 setup isn't cheap, so it makes sense they swap to solid rears and smaller fronts on cars that don't need them.

Mine is 1.4 TSI automatic DSG.

150ps MQB cars have 276mm or 288mm vented at the front. The rear should be 252mm solid.

As to where you can find this information -

  • Phone up a main dealer and ask

  • Look on a forum (such as this one) and then deploy the tape measure.

There should also be a code on the build sticker in the boot, however if you don't know what you're looking for, this will be pretty useless!

I found one code for the rear disc which is: 1KD, but I cannot find the one for the front.

Front brake PR code is never on the sticker. Message me with VIN if you'd like me to look it up for you.

Forgive me if I am teaching you to suck eggs, but can you not just put your reg in a site like eurocarparts and see what size discs it suggests for you? I've never had an issue with that.

In my case, it was about as useless as the chocolate teapot.....

Tried that, it came up with three alternatives with no advice on how to choose. The dealer couldn't even tell me because there are the three variants, the fitting of which seems to have depended on which way the wind was blowing at the time.

The only reliable way to do it was to take the wheel off and measure the disk.

That's generally the case. For our Fabia it gives two different sizes for the front discs, and just one size of disc for the back. The car has drum brakes at the back.

According to Jurid on autodoc, the Octavia MK3 1.4TSI 140HP/150HP has build codes 288x25mm 1ZE for the front brakes and 253x10mm 1KD for the rear brakes.

There are two versions of the 253x10mm 1KD rear brake discs. The change point appears to be the facelift in 2017.

Notice that the "D" dimension is 9.8mm wider in the late version of the 253x10mm 1KD rear brake discs.

@Carlston typo in your post above, I'm sure you meant to write 1ZE for the front PR code rather than 1KE.

Good reminder about the rear disc depth "gotcha". 👍

I did that on all the websites and like someone said they will give you too many options and sizes. Hence, the reason I asked on this forum.

Yeah, this doesn't always work with platform cars like this. I had a fun time finding the size on my Leon, as really anything from 256mm, 276mm, 288mm or 312mm is possible, depending on the site. Yes, we know that a 1.4 150ps model will have 288mm. but these sites don't seem that clever.

Even on a new car, BMW were insisting the brakes were 340mm. I measured them yesterday, and they're 350mm.
