Spare wheel purchasing (confirmation)

Featured Replies

Trying to pick up a spare wheel for our 2020 Kamiq SE-L which has the 18" crater wheels.

From other threads I think we have established an 18" will not fit the wheel well in the boot (unsure about 17") but 16" should to act as an emergency spare (obviously unmatched rims is not ideal, but needs mut

I just want to check would this from eBay make a good buy?

Im a bit clueless when it comes to tyres etc.

ebay link

Any help is greatly appreciated!

If you have the car, measure the diameter of the wheel well. The rolling diameter of a wheel inc.tyre is (tyre width x aspect ratio x2) plus wheel diameter (all in mm. e.g my Kamiq has 18 inch wheels with 215/45R18 wheels/tyres. The rolling diameter of that is 650.7mm. ((215x0.45x2)) +(18x25.4)). I purchased the Skoda official spare and tool kit - the wheel and tyre is 205/55R16 which has a rolling diameter of 632mm. This tyre etc fits snugly in the well. Remember, the cars with the tyre repair kit do not come from the factory with the jack, brace etc and so you might need to consider that. Ideally a temporary spare should have a diameter within 3% of the other wheels.

As for the Ebay listing, you need some more info about the tyre fitted to work out the rolling diameter - looking at the photos the tyre seems to be 206/60 R16 which gives a folling diameter of 653mm which may be larger than the car's fitted wheels.

I suspect that all Kamiq wheels have the same wheel bolt spacing etc., but you need to check that too.

If you haven't done already, it may be worthwhile having a word with your local dealer.

As mentioned not sure what tyre is fitted to that wheel on eBay and no guarantee on it’s integrity after obviously having been in an accident.

Also you would need to buy the foam insert, jack tools etc.

You can buy the complete set from a dealer, the part no in following link…

You can get the wheel, tyre and took kit direct from Skoda - https://www.skoda-parts.com/spare-part/658601011f-spare-wheel-skoda-37007.html

They quote 146 Euros for wheel and tyre plus 52 Euros for the tools plus carriage by Fedex (based on weight and probably around 20 Euros) Total about 220 Euros , approx. £190.

That's an undersize 205/55R16, which isn't a standard Kamiq tyre size. Compared to the standard 215/45R18 Kamiq tyre size 205/55R16 has an outside diameter 2.9% smaller.

A Kamiq owner on another thread found that a 205/60R16 6Jx16 ET35 5/100 57.1 fitted in the spare wheel well...so that seems like a better option.

I asked about all this from Skoda (and Skoda insurance) before I spec'd the space saver spare wheel.

First a full sized fully inflated 18 inch wheel will not quite fit the well.

The temporary spare wheel kit is approved by Skoda so can be used within the limitations stated.

Your insurer will be happy with the use of the temporary spare wheel if used within the limitations stated.

If you mix wheel rim diameter on an axle you might fall foul of the police, temporary get you home tyre accepted.

If you have an accident while travelling with wheel rims of different diameter you may find you have an issue with your insurance unless you are using the temporary spare wheel within it's stated limitations.

The point of the temporary wheel is to get you home or get you to the tyre depot so you can get a new tyre. Yes a 16 inch rim would also do that but it's a little easier to argue your case should the need arise if you are using the official option.

Myself, I don't care which option you select.

Why not just jack it up and pull a wheel off and try it Only take 10 mins and you will know

  • 2 weeks later...

Remember the outside diameter (around 650mm) depends on the tyre tread depth.

If tyre started with 7mm tread, still has 4mm, then it is 3mm less radius (or 6mm diameter). The effect it a part used tyre will fit in wheel well easier as slightly smaller diameter than brand new one.

I used both 215/45 R18 and 205/60 R16 (with winter tyres) on my Arona. Same basic wheel size (and other VW group models like T-cross) None were easy to get in the well when new. Recently sold the Arona and will be advertising the winters soon (July & Aug during hot dry weather seemed wrong time to try and sell winters).

With that in mind, 195/60R16 6Jx16 ET35 (the official Skoda winter tyre/rim size for the Kamiq) might be a good idea to use as a spare wheel.

Compared to the 205/60R16, 195/60R16 has a diameter 12mm smaller (or a radius 6mm smaller)...as shown in the chart below.

195/60R16 is a less common and slightly more expensive tyre size than 205/60R16, so I would probably go with the 205/60R16 tyre size if fitting and removing it from the wheel well isn't too difficult...Doofy managed it in his thread.

Outside diameter of tyre

195/60R16 640.4mm

215/45R18 650.7mm

205/60R16 652.4mm

205/55R17 657.3mm

From Kamiq owner's manual...
