should the coupling rod moving wheel hub to one side?

hi, today i change the cv axle boot because they had tears. when i removed the tie rod and steering joint (by the 3 bolts) i noticed that the passenger side wheel hub tend to pull to one side (wither left or right).

when i inspected that the behavior is cause by the coupling rod i wondered if it is normal.

at the driver side the coupling rod did not cause this problem and i could move the struts with wheel hub without any resistance.

it seems that the coupling rod have tension or something and that is the reason why it happened.

is this behivior normal? if yes/not then why only the passenger side is like this and not both?

When you say coupling rod do you mean the drive shaft?, i have seen this problem once before and it was a worn and dry inner cv joint had to remove the drive shaft and strip down the inner joint gave it a good clean and could then see the inner casting of the joint had a wear ring and when you went over a certain angle it sort of jumped into that postition, it would go left or right like if it was sprung once yo moved it past the centre position the inner joint was replaced but i did advise my friend it might have been better and cheaper to replace the complete driveshaft as the outer CV had done the same amount of milage

when i say coupling rod i mean part number 7 on the diagram that i linked.

also i did not change the cv joint it self. i replaced the protactive dust boot, that way i would reserve the cv joint for longer

I am guessing that you only have one side of the car off the ground maybe? If that is so the anti roll bar can cause what you describe I think.

I'm interpreting 'coupling rod' on the diagram to be a steering Tie Rod, there should be no lateral movement in the swivel ball-joint at either end.

The “coupling rod” (item 7 ) is a drop link. It couples the anti-roll bar to the strut. With only one side of the vehicle raised from the ground the tension in the anti-roll bar will force the strut and hub assembly to move as you had released the lower ball joint. This will allow the strut/hub to move as you have described. Raising the other front wheel off the ground will stop this from happening.

thanks everyone. it would make sense that the problem had been cause by one wheel touching the ground. when i finished working the the driver side i put the wheel on and lowered the car so that's probably why i have a bruise on my face now (got the wheel hub to hit my face when i tried to mount it into steering joint lol)
